“He felt safe around you,” Grace said softly, still slightly tucked behind Annie.
“Christ, I’m sorry Grace,” I said. “I didn’t mean to scare you. What can I do to make it better?”
She shook her head. “Just give me a few minutes to get myself sorted. That’s all.”
Annie turned and kissed her omega’s cheek. “She’s mostly got her tendency to panic under control.”
“It doesn’t help when I’m an aggressive asshole though.”
Grace stepped around her mate and hugged me. “I’ll be fine, promise.”
“Let me know if you want me to treat you to coffee or ice cream as an apology.”
She gave me a shy smile. “You know I’ll never turn down a treat.” She looked down and rubbed her bump. “But maybe coffee will have to wait.”
I chuckled. “Whenever you’re ready. I owe you for scaring you.”
She shook her head. “I… kinda understand. I remember how protective Annie was too. An alpha worried about their omega can be a scary thing.”
“He’s just my neighbor.”
She let out a single chuckle. “If you say so.”
Annie took a seat at the table. “Since you said he’s asleep, why don’t you catch me up.”
I nodded and sat across from her.
“Where is he?” Grace asked.
“On the couch,” I replied.
She nodded. “I’ll go sit near him so that he doesn’t wake up alone.”
“Ok.”
Annie turned and we both watched as Grace walked into the other room.
“She’s really made it her mission to help other omegas,” Annie said.
“I feel like an ass for scaring her.”
“She’s strong. Trust her. If she says she’ll be ok, she’ll be ok.” She turned to face me. “Now tell me what you know.”
Chapter 11 - Justin
Iawoke with a jerk, every muscle tensing as the remnants of the nightmare lingered. My eyes darted around the unfamiliar space, and my instincts demanded that I flee.
“Shh,” a woman’s voice sounded. “It’s ok. You’re safe.”
I fought to catch my breath as I looked around, eyes finally landing on her.
Slowly it came back, the police leaving and my need to get away from my apartment. I’d gone across to Max’s place.
And, apparently, I’d fallen asleep on his couch.
I closed my eyes and took several deep breaths. It was the thing I could deal with quickest.
Once I felt like I had air in my lungs I focused on the woman. “Ummm… hi.”
