“Are you sure?”

“Positive.”

Another weak smile. “Thank you.”

He glanced at his front door, noting how the police seemed to examine the handle.

“Did they tell you how long it’ll be?”

He shook his head.

“Why not go over and tell them where you’ll be,” I suggested.

“Ok.”

He jogged across, spoke to the cops, pointed out my apartment, then returned.

“We good?”

“Yeah,” he said softly.

My alpha side wanted to pull him into my arms and tell him that everything would be ok. But it wasn’t a promise I knew I could keep, especially since I didn’t know what he was facing.

I could support him though, which was almost as important.

We walked back in and I got him situated near the window again.

“I’m going to make a phone call,” I said once he was seated. “Is it ok if I step away for a few minutes?”

He studied me, then nodded.

“I’ll just be in the bedroom,” I stated. “Call or come get me if you need.”

“Ok.”

I pulled my phone from my pocket as I walked. I might not be able to help, but I knew one person who could. Or who could at least give me the tools I needed.

“Max?” Annie asked as she picked up. “What’s up?”

“I need your help.”

“With what?”

I took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. “One of my neighbors… I think…” I swallowed.

“Max?”

“I think he may…” I ran a hand through my hair. “Jesus Annie. I don’t know. I haven’t asked. But I just have a gut feeling, yanno?”

“Slow down. Tell me what you think is going on.”

I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. “It’s just a feeling, but I think he might have a stalker.”

She sucked in a breath. “Tell me everything.”

I told her about seeing him acting strange with his groceries a few days before, then finding him hiding on my patio when I arrived home.

“Hard to be sure,” she sighed. “But I agree that it’s all worrying.”
