Opening the door, the servant stood outside holding a bowl of rice, "Madam, the old lady has asked you to take this lunch up to the young master who has just arrived."

"The newly arrived young master? What newly arrived young master?" Xu Zi felt an ominous premonition rising in her heart.

"It’s the young master the master brought back today. The old lady said you haven’t met him yet and wanted you to get to know him." In fact, the mother’s words implied a fear that not knowing each other may lead to fights or misunderstandings, which would be undesirable.

"Are you talking about that bastard? Dad brought him back here?" Xu Zi couldn’t believe it and asked.

The servant didn’t know how to respond, so she remained silent.

"Give it to me." Xu Zi took the things from her hand and stormed upstairs.

Only after watching her go up did the servant go downstairs.

"Madam, the eldest daughter-in-law has taken it up."

"Hmm."

"We can go up later, there’s no rush," Ranran set down her chopsticks.

"Do you want to eat some more?" Seeing her eat so little, the mother said.

"No, thank you. I’ve already eaten a lot," Ranran waved her hand.

In an effort to gain some weight, she was trying to eat more diligently.

"Mom, do you think my sister-in-law is going to start arguing with him right away?" Ranran blinked her eyes inquiringly.

"Don’t look at me like that; I’m not your husband," the mother looked away. "I don’t think so. He’s just a child; can they really start a fight?"

Xu Zi sometimes could be unreasonable, but most of the time she was sensible and knew the bigger picture.

It was because of this that she didn’t hold Xu Zi’s background against her.

"I understand, the incident before was her fault, but it’s been so long, and Xiaohan has been so good to you, so try not to dwell on it," the mother thought that Ranran was still holding onto past grievances, so she spoke these words.

"Mom, you’re overthinking it; when I was young, I mistook dependence for love. Since I have accepted that sentiment, naturally, I won’t hold a grudge over the past. But, Mom, do you truly understand my sister-in-law’s nature?"

How could she not understand? She and her had been companions for ten years; although not a biological mother and daughter, they were almost the same.

How could a mother not know her own daughter?

"Often, we only see the side of others they wish to show us. If you don’t dig deeper or discover it yourself, how can you see it?"

"Are you saying I’m old and confused?" the mother’s tone was unclear.

"Please don’t misunderstand, Mom. I just wanted to remind you that, after all, some people hide very deeply, and it’s quite possible you could be deceived," Ranran said lightly.

"I don’t know about being deceived, but since we’re on the topic, I want to make something clear; I didn’t dislike you before.

It was you who were first with Ah Yi and then got married to Xiaohan.

Regardless of the motives, it looked too ugly for the three of you to be involved like that," she stated.

Just this love triangle was enough for outsiders to talk about for a lifetime.

Ranran nodded to show she understood.

"But now I’ve come to terms with it. Children and grandchildren have their own destinies; I don’t want to interfere too much." She couldn’t even take care of herself, let alone meddle with others’ lives.

It wasn’t easy, but she finally heard these words. Ranran felt a sigh of relief internally, but she didn’t show it on the surface.

Guessing that enough time had passed, she said, "Mom, let’s go up."

She would know whether what she said was right or not once they were upstairs.
