Timothy, the Marquess of Edenbridge, knows that he must marry but feels himself drawn to a match of affection rather than requirement. Uncertain how one ought to go about such things and having stepped badly twice, he writes in desperation to the advice column at The London Chronicle. Soon, he finds himself doing a good deal better, especially with one Lady Harsham, though his interest in the letter writer grows.
