“So what’s the weather like in Ohio?” I ask.

“Cold,” Rick replies.

“Anything else I need to know?”

“Dress classically stylish. I can arrange for someone to dress you,” he says eyeing me up and down like a prized bull at auction. “But looking at you, I don’t think you need it.”

“Thank you,” I say reluctantly because while his statement is really disgusting, it’s also true because I’m the shit and my stylist is even better. I’d be lost without Cara. But I don’t mention that now, I’ll have Carter add her to the team itinerary later.

“Do you need a hair and makeup person?” he asks.

“No. I have one,” I answer. “I’ll call her tomorrow. She’ll have to have time to arrange for her daughter to stay with her grandma, so I’ll need firm dates before you go.”

“On it.”

“What just happened here?” Jake asks.

“Your girl and I are taking over the world. Uniting for a common goal,” Rick tells him without missing a beat.

“God, help us all,” Jake says seriously.

“Hey!” I laugh.

“Did you know that there is a one-eyed cat staring at me,” Rick says.

“Be nice to Winks, douche,” Jake laughs before scooping up my cat and holding him like a newborn baby.

“You have a cat now?” he asks. “A dog I could have used. But this will still work.”

“I have eight now,” Jake says rolling his eyes. I wonder if he’s used to Rick’s political machinations by now.

“Eight?” Rick laughs with a smile that finally meets his eyes like he’s truly happy for his friend. “I never thought I’d see the day.”

“Eight,” Jake confirms with another answering chuckle and a shake of his head from Rick.

“Veteran’s Gala tomorrow night. Ball gown. Tux. Make pretty eyes at him while grabbing votes. Lather, rinse, repeat,” Rick says on a laugh as he pushes up from the table. “I’ll attend the gala with you, so I’ll pick you two up here with the car.”

“Sounds good, brother.” Jake grips him in a man hug.

“See you later,” Rick responds. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“Get out of here, Monk. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life.”

Rick just laughs before he shows himself out.

“Now, where were we?” Jake asks, turning to me after setting the cat back on the floor where he scampers off.

I feel like a deer caught in headlights. “Uhh…”

“That’s what I thought too,” he says just before his mouth descends on mine. I could have stopped him. I had plenty of time. But did I? Absolutely not. I am firmly caught in Jake Chancellor’s web. “Let’s go to bed, Grace.”

I whimper when he pulls away from me. I miss the heat of his body pressed against mine instantly. I think that’s it. He’s going to make me follow him up the stairs like a sad little puppy, and oh how I would go willingly for the spectacular orgasms he is promising me. And also, how sad does that make me? But it is what it is. When he scoops me up in his arms like a bride, I let out a squeal of surprise. My startled reaction makes Jake chuckle low in his throat, and I swear I feel the vibration between my legs.

I tuck myself into his arms as he makes his way up the stairs, never once showing any kind of strain from carrying my person around. Instead, he makes me feel precious and light as a feather. I am a powerhouse in this town. I am someone to be respected and sometimes feared, but to be revered and cherished is new for me, and I’m not going to lie; the heady feeling could easily become addictive.

Jake stalks into the master bedroom like a hungry lion. He kicks the door closed without a backward glance and continues to move through the room like a man on a mission. He stops just before the bed and slowly lowers my feet to the ground while holding me close. I feel every contour of muscle under his clothes and his hard cock as I slide down the front of his body.

“Jake,” I whisper. I’m not entirely sure what I’m asking for. For him to slow down or speed things up. I don’t know. I only know what Ineed.
