Astraea didn’t come back.
I watched the veil shimmering darkly in the distance, leaning in one of the archways of the bell tower.
How lonely the night was without her to find in the sky.
How silent the world was when I couldn’t feel her within.
How tormenting my own vicious mind was, reeling from the thought that I was no longer her home.
It was just a matter of time before she realized that. Found better in the land of her people, and her other bonded who was everything she should want.
Everything I couldn’t be for her.
It was real fucking ironic really—I was only truly heartless when I was without her. My miserable, cold heart always had been, and always would be, in her possession.
I took a drink of wine, sitting on the ledge and trying to stop my demons from surfacing. They wanted to tear down the veil to reach her. Kill everyone in my path to take her.
But love couldn’t be selfish.
I existed for nearly one hundred years before her, but I only knew what it was to live after I’d met her.
