“If I were, don’t you think you would have noticed when you kissed me? Or when you were pushing your pussy into my face?”
“Wow…fuck you.”
He didn’t issue a chuckle this time. Didn’t seem to care at all.
“Untie me.”
He brought the horse to a stop before he walked over and untied my bindings, his face still handsome despite the rough elements, despite the fact that he hadn’t slept in who knew how long. He was perfectly preserved, his face always chiseled, his eyes bright like he’d just woken up.
I rubbed my wrists when my hands were free, and he started to pull the horse again. Now that the danger had passed, the cold sank into my flesh and bones, and I winced as the wind struck my skin. A powerful gust swept through, and snow hit me right in the face. “If you aren’t one of the Teeth, why are you taking me to them?”
“For a princess, you have a good sense of direction.”
I hated the way he saidprincess, like it was synonymous with damsel in distress. “I’m more than a princess. I’m the future Queen of Delacroix, HeartHolme, and all the Kingdoms across this continent—and I know exactly where you’re taking me.”
He ignored me.
“Answer my question.”
“Sorry, sweetheart, but you aren’t my princess. I don’t owe you anything.”
“You have to be a really heartless piece of shit to do what you did and escort me to my death.”
“And you would be right.”
Powerless, I sat on that horse and tried to think, tried to think about what my father would do. “If I’m going to die, you may as well tell me who you are.”
“I already said you aren’t going to die. Just keep your mouth shut, and they’ll let you go.”
“Well, I never keep my mouth shut, and I’m not letting anything happen to my father.”
“That’s your prerogative.”
“Just tell me.”
There was a long pause before he answered. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
I thought of the black ship Uncle Ian had spotted on the coast, a ship no one could identify. “You aren’t from this land. You’re from somewhere else…somewhere far away.”
He remained quiet.
“Why travel all the way here to do the bidding of monsters?”
“Because I needed something from those monsters.”
“I’m sure I could meet their price—and double it.”
He brought the horse to a standstill.
My heart raced with a surge of hope.
He moved to where I sat on the horse, looking up at me with his gloved hands still secure on the reins. “They’ve already completed their end of the deal. I’m bound by my honor to fulfill my promise.”
“Honor? If you had any honor, you would be saving me.”
He looked away, seeing the path in the darkness that I couldn’t make out. “As I said, it’s nothing personal.” He started to pull the horse again, directly into the wind and the snow.
