I had no warning of the attack. One moment everything was calm. The next, a loud boom and female screams erupted behind me. I almost leapt into the air in surprise. My tongue stumbled over the ritual words and I lost control of the net.

Spinning around, I gaped at the sight in front of me. Both Michelle and Bea were on the ground, blood dark on the ground around them. Fuck. I’d had no warning. None.

Electra, what’s wrong?

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t get out the words. Thanks to my pre-cog, none of Bastien’s team had ever been seriously injured working with me. And now, I had failed two people, who were only here because of me.

I should have used those moments better. I should have wondered who had taken out my Shifter bodyguards and how they’d done it without my pre-cog alerting me to the danger. I should have remembered the spell that smothered magic. I should have run.

Instead, I just stood there like an untrained idiot and when the next sigil-covered drone dropped, it got me.
