My Pixie was adorable when she was angry.
Like a spitting kitten. I wiped the grin off my face before she could see it.
Even though she was cute when she was all fired up, I didn’t really like to make her angry.
And I wasn’t going to budge on this. If I knew that there was a threat, I would always put myself between her and danger.
No matter that she was trained and I wasn’t.
I was bigger, stronger and much better able to resist damage in this form than her vulnerable human skin.
And I could feel that she had still put a shield around me. Still protecting me, even as I protected her.
I loved this woman so much. But I wouldn’t let her stand in the way of danger. She had trained for her role, but it was a job. It wasn’t a vocation. It wasn’t her passion. There were many other things she could do as my mate that would make her happier.
I was born to be an Alpha. To protect my mate. To protect my babies. Fuck, if only she could be pregnant now. I kept that thought tightly to myself.
Her anger softened when I explained my position. Then I felt her doubt. Confusion. She promised me that we would talk later. Good .
Footsteps approached. A stride that I recognised. It was Luc. Just Luc.
My muscles relaxed a little knowing it was only my brother, although the fact he was here, interrupting us, couldn’t be good. I’d said only for a national emergency, so something major must have blown up politically while I was in here with my mate.
Fuck. Would this ever stop? I used to live for this drama. But now, I was over it.
Casually I strolled to the bed and collected my boxers. I wasn’t shy about showing off my body, but now that I was mated the sight of my cock was for my Pixie only.
Luc knocked on the door. Opening it just enough to fit through, I slipped into the corridor. “What happened?”
“Billy got a tipoff from someone at Council headquarters. The Council is going into session to debate whether you need to be impeached for a non-consensual mating.”
Fuck. I ran my hands through my hair. Who had Maximilian spoken to? What had he told them? And how had a session been called without my knowledge? I was President of the Council.
I had to go now. Thanks to Luc’s tipoff I could get to the headquarters in time to present my side of the case. I could head this off before it came to a vote of impeachment.
“One minute,” I told him, turning towards the door and letting myself inside.
My little Pixie looked up at me, concern evident in her eyes. “I have to go, baby. I’m sorry. I don’t know how long it will take.”
“I’m coming with you,” she said.
The memory of her on the floor of Maximilian’s living room flashed into my mind. “No,” I said. “I need you to stay here. I need to know you’re safe.”
Her eyes softened even though her lips were still pressed together. “Professionally, I disagree.” She sighed. “I hate it, but I’ll wait here for you if you take one of the other members of the team.”
“I promise,” I said, turning back to the door. I didn’t need a bodyguard, but for her I would take one.
“At least put on some clothes,” she snapped from behind me. Smirking, I delayed long enough to pull on a shirt and pants. Jealousy looked good on her. I opened the door and walked out. It was time to crush Maximilian Veder.
My brother waited outside the door, falling into step beside me. “I need you to stay here,” I told him. “Work on damage control. Get the lawyers in.”
He nodded. “Got it.”
“Keep our mates safe.”
“You know I will.” When we reached the ground floor he peeled off to his wing while I headed for the front door where Matteo already waited. He followed me to the chopper, settling in beside me as he usually did.
The ride was silent and I used the time to plan the argument I would present to the Council.
I would remind them of today’s press release and that an accusation of a non-consensual mating bite was a grave insult.
Maximilian couldn’t know anything. He was just trying to stir up trouble.
The only people who knew the full truth about our mating were my little Pixie and me.
