This was the time.

“Kady,” I began, reaching into my pocket while she still looked at the tree. “You’re an amazing, beautiful woman, and I want to raise this child with you and be with you forever.” When she turned around, I was kneeling with the small satin box open in my hand, the ring inside glittering like a capture star. “Will you marry me?”

Kady’s hand flew to her mouth, but it couldn’t hide her happy smile. Tears formed at the corners of her eyes, and she managed to whisper through her shaking fingers, “Yes.

She threw herself at me and I hugged her as tightly as I dared, then carefully took off her glove and slid the ring onto her finger. “Wait,” she said, moving her finger so that the holiday lights played off the band. “We should take a picture for my parents.”

“Sure.” Together, we moved closer to the great tree so its glow could illuminate our faces.

“That’s a beautiful picture.” Kady admired the photo I’d taken while she let me slide her glove back on. “Frame-worthy. What should we caption it?”

“Summer wedding,” I suggested as Kady shivered. I pressed my chest to her back, watching over her shoulder as she attached the photo to a text to her mom.

“Summer wedding. I always wanted a summer wedding,” Kady said wistfully. “How did you know?”

“Because I love you.” Staring at the beautiful tree and feeling Kady’s ring underneath her glove, my heart felt so full that I had to say something to tell her how I felt

“I love you too.”

We walked back along the park path, past the reindeer and lamp posts with their garlands and lights, and into the warmth of the home we would share together for the rest of our lives.
