“It’s only right. Mary is the one who brought us together, really. It was her idea for me to make an account on that app.” Graham waited until I used his hand to balance as I stepped up into a chair, then took a seat himself.
“Then it’s really, really nice to meet you, Mary. And thank you.”
She accepted my sincerity with a nod and a smile. “Then we can get down to business.”
“Business?” My eyes flicked between Mary and Graham.
“I didn’t just bring you here to introduce you to an old friend, Kady,” Graham said, leaning back with a smile. “I’ll let Mary explain.”
“Graham tells me that you graduated from Juilliard in late May, Kady?”
“That’s right.” Where was this going?
“I have a friend working at the Chicago Ballet Center. They’re looking for a director to implement a new program. The position wouldn’t be physically strenuous, and the director would be in charge of two to four teachers with about ten students each to begin with. The program is expected to succeed and expand rapidly.”
When Mary finished I was leaning forward, thoroughly interested in what she had to say. “That sounds like the perfect job for me. I’m assuming Graham told you about….”
“Your pregnancy, yes. That wouldn’t be a problem in this position. It might even be a bonus to the Chicago Ballet Center.” Mary reached into a tan purse and pulled out a business card. “If you call the number on this card and ask for the name I wrote on the back, you can set up a time to look over the place and hear about the new program.
I accepted the card, tiredness once more evaporated by joy. “Thank you. Both of you.” Graham’s smile told me that he’d caught the special look I had sent him.
I had a boyfriend who loved me, parents who supported my choices, a chance to get a job that put everything I’d worked so hard to learn to use—what more could a girl want?
Not a girl; a woman. I was a woman, a woman with a soon-to-be-family, and I couldn’t be more content.
