I tossed her the remote. “Why don’t you choose?”
She scrolled through the movies so fast it surprised me she could even read the titles. I was even more surprised when she picked one of the latest psychological thrillers that I read made people afraid to sleep for weeks. I didn’t care what we watched.
The movie started, and I made it a point to stare at the screen and not her. As the thriller progressed, Lily set down her mug on the nightstand and a pillow took up a permanent place in her lap. When she squealed in fright for the fifth time, I wondered why she chose this one.
“You okay?” I asked. “We don’t have to keep watching if it freaks you out.”
“I’m not freaked out,” she replied. The slight tremble to her voice completely made a liar out of her. When the killer jumped out at one of the unsuspecting victims, Lily screamed and threw herself closer to me.
She was now only a few feet away. “No?”
“Nope.” She pulled the pillow up over her face until only her eyes were visible.
She was being stubborn for no reason. “Lily, this is ridiculous. Let’s turn it off.”
“I’m fine,” she responded, then screamed at the next scene, and threw herself into my side, her eyes squeezed shut.
She was not fine, but I wasn’t about to complain. Her body next to mine felt far too good, and I was happy to be the one to comfort her.
Even if that was all this was.
Chapter Twenty-One
Lily
My eyes widened andpanic seized my heart. I was practically on top of Jaxon, my sort of boss, and I didn’t want to move. I raised my head only far enough to stare at his throat. Why did every part of his body look sexy and lickable? “You must think I’m such a wimp.”
He laughed. “Nah, although I can’t figure out why you picked this one.”
I snuggled in a bit more and tucked my head under his chin. He wasn’t pushing me away and his body fit mine just right. Agh, how could I admit that I saw nothing on the screen in front of us? That the only reason I chose the movie was because my mind was on how we were sitting a few feet from each other. On a freaking bed.
“I didn’t know what I picked until it played,” I confessed.
“Oh good, because I was thinking you picked this kind of movie so I might be the one to jump into your arms in fright,” he teased.
My heart raced. He was being ridiculously and adorably sweet for not pushing me on why I had paid no attention to the movie choices in front of me. How was I going to resist this side of him? A side I suspected most people didn’t see.
