“That’s because he’s not in the system, and he knows it, so he’s confident he’s going to keep getting away with it.”

“Son of a bitch,” Lindsey said. “Where are you with trying FDS?”

“Meeting with the mayor later this afternoon to make the case.”

“Good luck. I hope you can sway her. This guy is getting high off his own success. It’s only a matter of time before he strikes again.”

“I agree. Did you hear what happened at Green’s last night?”

“Everyone is talking about it. I saw him and Dominguez together at the Christmas Eve party, but I hadn’t heard they were officially a couple.”

“It’s a recent development that’s not going over well with Green’s ex-girlfriend. She’d decided they were getting married and had even gone so far as to book a venue, which was news to him.”

“Wow, that’s pretty effed up.”

“She’s a piece of work. She disparaged Gigi’s ethnicity to me when I had words with her the last time we had her in lockup.”

“Ew.”

“Exactly. She showed her ass in a big way, and he heard the whole ugly thing. I just feel sorry for Cam and Gigi that they’re dealing with this on top of everything else they’ve already been through with her ex.”

Lindsey shook her head in dismay. “They’re certainly being tested.”

“Yep. Let me go see where we are in tracking down his ex.”

“Have a good one.”

“You, too, Doc.”

Sam arrived in the pit to find everyone standing around Green’s cubicle as he updated them on the goings-on the night before.

“The brick just missed hitting us,” he said, running his fingers through his hair, which was standing on end. His usually pressed-and-polished appearance was disheveled, and he looked as if he’d been up all night.

“Any sign of Jaycee?” Sam asked him.

“Nothing yet. I’ve looked in all the usual places.”

“You shouldn’t be the one looking for her, which you know,” Sam said.

“I just looked. I would’ve called for backup if I’d seen her.”

“You’ve notified airports, train stations, bus depots, etc.?”

“Everything.”

Sam should’ve known. He was nothing if not thorough.

His cell phone rang, and he pounced on it. “It’s Jaycee’s mother.” He took the call, putting it on speaker. “Mrs. Patrick, thank you for returning my call.”

“I can’t believe Jaycee would do something like this, Cameron.”

“She’s already slashed my tires.”

“What?”

“She didn’t tell you she spent a night in jail after that?”

“No, she didn’t. She’s been extremely upset since you broke up with her, but this…”
