“It’s beyond frustrating, and it’s been more than a month since Audrey was killed. One of the victims who survived is too traumatized to be interviewed, so we have nothing from her. Jeannie brought in the couple who assisted another victim and got nothing new.”
“You and your team are doing everything you can to get answers for Wes and the other victims, babe.”
“Everything we can just isn’t enough in this case.”
Chapter Twenty-Two
Cameron had been preparing for this night for weeks, biding his time until Gigi seemed stronger and more like her old self before taking the next step with her. They’d dined at one of his favorite restaurants, which was only two blocks from his apartment complex, so they’d walked.
On the way home, he’d put his arm around her and kept a careful eye out for black ice. They’d had enough injuries to last awhile, and now was the time for new beginnings.
“That was so good,” she said. “Thanks for dinner.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I need to start doing some cooking so you’ll know I can.”
“I’m not worried about whether you can.”
“You’ve been feeding me for weeks now. The least I can do is return the favor.”
“Feeding you has been my pleasure. You don’t owe me anything, Gigi.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Nope.”
“Yup.”
Cam loved everything about being with her, even “arguing,” if you could call it that. He couldn’t help but compare this relationship to the last one he’d been in and find that one lacking in every possible way. When he thought of Jaycee, he cringed and gave thanks for not doing something stupid, like marrying the wrong woman.
Since he was thinking of her—which he tried hard not to do since she’d slashed his tires and then insulted Gigi—he couldn’t believe it when he saw her sitting on the stairs to his townhouse.
He froze.
Gigi looked up at him.
Cameron handed her his keys. “Go inside and stay there.”
“Cam…”
“Please go, Gigi.”
“I’ll be listening, and if there’s any trouble, I’m calling Dispatch,” Gigi said so Jaycee would hear.
When she’d gone up the stairs and into his place, Cameron turned his gaze on his ex. “What do you want?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“We have nothing to talk about.”
“Yes, we do. I’m pregnant.”
“It’s not mine.”
“Yes, it is.”
“No, it isn’t, Jaycee.”
