Page 70 of Slumming It
Standing at her side, Nikki was dressed much the same, except her dress was purple, and her jewelry sported gemstones that matched the vibrant color of her skin-tight dress.
What were those purple gemstones called?Amethysts, maybe?
As if it really mattered.Unlike them, I wore no jewelry, not even earrings, which was totally understandable, considering that Reese Murdock had whisked me away straight from work.
When Morgan continued to glare, I finally tried to stand, but bumped my legs on the edge of the booth's table, making me wince and plop back down like a rag doll.
Morgan snorted. "How can you be drunk already? You haven't even gotten the champagne." She gave me a condescending smile. "A single glass, was it?"
I blinked.How did she know?
Next to her, Nikki sneered, "They don't sell it by the glass, dumb-ass."
Heat flooded my face.Really?
I had no idea.No wonder the server had looked slightly perplexed. But shehadtaken my order and promised to be back, so I hadn't given it much thought.Had she consulted management or something?
Now I felt like an idiot.Damn it.I should have known it was ordered by the bottle. Of all the things to be embarrassed about, this really took the cake.
And now I didn't know what to say, so I said nothing as Morgan continued with a little laugh. "When I heard that some chick ordered a single glass, I justhadto see who it was."
Next to her, Nikki said, "We should've known it was you."
Morgan whirled to face her. "I already told her that."
Nikki frowned. "Yeah, but she didn't get it. That's why I said it again."
"Yeah, but you changed it. You saidweshould've known, butyoudidn't know anything until I said so."
Nikki's tone grew snotty. "I know you're not wearing a bra."
"Yeah, well neither areyou."
"Yeah, butmynipples aren't showing through my dress." Nikki glanced at Morgan's chest. "Seriously, you're gonna poke an eye out with those things."
I couldn't help it. I looked. Sure enough, Morgan's nipples were on obvious display through the thin blue fabric of her ultra-tight dress. Funny, I hadn't noticed them until now – even though theywereat eye level.
I was still studying them when Morgan demanded, "What areyoulooking at?"
Shit.I'd been caught staring straight at her boobs. But hey, in my own defense, they were right there in front of me. I jerked my gaze upward. "I was just seeing if Nikki was right."
"Which Iwas," Nikki chimed in.
Morgan whirled to face her sidekick. "Yeah? Well at least mine are real."
"So are mine!" Nikki glanced down toward her own cleavage. "Well, the nipples are for sure."
As they started bickering back and forth, I whirled once again to scan the lower level.Had Reese Murdock truly left?
It certainly looked that way, but I refused to believe it. Or maybe I was in full denial, looking for goodness where none existed. When I felt a hard poke at my shoulder – from Morgan obviously – I whirled toward her and blurted out, "Just leave me alone, alright?"
This only made her laugh. "Leaveyoualone. Did you forget? This ismyclub."
I hated being bullied. I hated seeing others bullied, too, which is how I'd run afoul of Morgan in the first place all those years ago. I lifted my chin and said with all the attitude I could muster, "No, it's your parents' club."
She gave me a thin smile. "Yes.Myparents. Not yours." Her smile morphed into a sneer. "And how'dyouget in?" When I opened my mouth to reply, she cut me off by saying, "Forget it. I don't care. You'll be leaving soon enough." She loomed closer and practically growled, "Got it?"
My mind whirled with the implications of what she'd just said.I was being kicked out, just like I'd feared. Now I had a choice to make.Should I leave on my own? Or wait to be dragged out like a sack of potatoes?
