Page 104 of Slumming It
I laughed. "Oh come on. Seriously who?"
"The internet," she repeated. "Youdoknow you're famous now, right?"
I stared at my sister. "What?"
In reply, she pulled out her cellphone and started scrolling across the screen. A moment later, she turned the screen outward to face me. On it, I saw a picture of me and Reese Murdock at Solitaire's.
It was a clear image of us making out like horny teenagers on the dance floor. Below the picture was an even clearer headline.Reese Murdock Ditches Fiancéefor Trailer Trash Waitress.
I almost staggered in surprise. "Where'd you see this?"
"Wheredidn'tI see it," she countered. "The story's all over social media."
I looked closer at the screen and noted that this particular story was posted on some celebrity blogger site, one that I was only vaguely familiar with. "If they're talking about him and Cassandra Bloom, I don't think they were ever engaged."
But even as I said it, I realized that I wasn't quite sure if this was true. Come to think of it, I wasn't even sure that Cassandra Bloom was the fiancée in question.Oh, God. What if he had another so-called fiancée rattling around?
Vivian studied my face. "You don't even know, do you?"
"Actually…" Now, I felt a little foolish. "We didn't really talk about it."In fact, we hadn't done much talking at all.
"Are yousureyou used protection? You wouldn’t lie to me, would you?"
I didn't appreciate the implication, especially now when I was still basking in the afterglow. Of course, the glow had faded just a little, thanks to everything I'd just learned, but I still couldn't regret what I'd done.
It reallyhadbeen a night to remember.
I was recalling some of the very best parts when Vivian gave a horrified gasp. "Oh, my God. So youdidn'tuse protection?"
This snapped me back to reality. "Of course we did."
"So why didn't you answer?"
"Because I already answered you once," I said. "What do you want? Pictures?"
"Oh, like there's not enough of those already." She glanced down at her phone. "And you don't even care that they're calling you trailer trash?"
"Of course I care. But it's not really true." Under my breath, I added, "Even if wedolive in a trailer."
"And how did they know that?" she asked.
"I have no idea," I said. "I don't even think Reese knows."
"Well, he certainly doesnow."
It was a sobering thought. Still, I replied with more bravado than I felt. "Maybe he wouldn’t care."
She grimaced. "Yeah, no kidding."
I felt like I was missing something. "What do you mean?"
Her eyes were brimming with concern. "Do you really think he cares about you?"
I answered on instinct. "Yes."
She gave me a dubious look. "Oh, really? Did hesayso?"
In spite of the tension, my heart warmed at the memory of what he'd told me at the bar. They were rude to someone I care about.I straightened. "Yes, he did, in fact."
