Maverick

What in the hell is happening?

One minute, we’re about to start the same argument about candy bars and bandages and the next, Daniel’s lips are on mine.

Just a quick kiss. Maybe to shut me up since I’d degraded to repeating my arguments and was on the verge of crying.

Not because I was sad but because I was so angry at him for this ridiculousness.

We stood there, lips inches apart. My body tingled, head to toe, as I realized I’d just kissed the wolf of my dreams.

“Say something,” Danny said.

My eyes flicked over his shoulder, and I realized we were on my porch. My door was wide open. I didn’t know what to do, so I moved to the side. “Come in.”

Danny pursed his lips and moved past me, taking the cookies in the process. I didn’t care about PDAs or anyone seeing us, but I had just woken up a few minutes before. Thank the goddess I’d brushed my teeth.

I took my time stepping inside, shutting the door behind me.

Danny kissed me.

“Was that a mistake?” I asked.

“Was what a mistake? Me kissing you?”

I nodded, my words all of a sudden failing me.

“No.”

Thank goodness he’d put the cookies on the side table because I reached out, fisted his collar, and pulled him to me. “Good because I’ve been waiting forever for you to kiss me.”

This time, the kiss was nothing close to chaste. He pressed me into the door. My fingers delved into his hair while he cupped the back of my head with one hand, and the other, skimmed my hip. I tilted my head, needing more and making a noise that confirmed it. Except it came out as more of a whine.

He pulled back with a smile. “You need more, omega? One kiss isn’t enough?”

I nodded. “Please.”

“Hmmm,” he said, moving his hips side to side, making our hardened cocks rub against one another. “It’s not enough for me either.”

If he asked me, I would’ve let him lead me into the bedroom and mate me right then and there. We could figure out the rest in the aftermath. We kissed for a few minutes until I was sure I would come in my pajama pants. We parted, both breathing heavily. “Why are you stopping?” I asked.

“Because we need to talk. There are things I need to tell you, Mav.”

Mav. Everyone used that nickname except some older people.

But, coming from his lips? It sounded fantastic.

“Okay. Yeah. Okay. How about some coffee?” Anything to get him to stay longer.

Otherwise, I was afraid we’d return to the status quo, and after tasting him, all cinnamon and apple pie, there was no way I could go back.

“That sounds good.”

I led him to the kitchen on shaky legs. He chuckled. Goddess. Danny was in my kitchen. I was making coffee for us and he’d just kissed the life out of me. Once the coffee was dripping, I turned to face him. “Let’s talk.”

The wolf sat down at my kitchen table which felt incredibly small with him in it. “Come sit with me.”

Instead of pulling out a chair, he patted his thighs.

“On your lap?” I scoffed.

“Yes. We’ve spent far too long apart. Come on. I won’t bite…yet.”

My stomach fluttered with a thousand butterflies as I crossed the short distance and perched right on the edge of his leg.

I gasped as he wrapped his arms around my middle and pulled me close.

“There. That’s better. I’ve been attracted to you for months, Mav.

Months that felt like years. You’re so beautiful, smart, and kind.

Mr. Bryant told me the only reason he was able to buy groceries this week was because you gave him his medicine for free. ”

“I have to help people. You help people too. I’ve heard gossip about you as well. Helping out a single father who couldn’t afford diapers.”

He nodded. “We have to help people. There’s no point in earning money and doing well if you can’t contribute to the community. That’s one of the things that attracted me to you. Besides how handsome you are.”

“Really?” I asked. Since he was being so forthcoming, I decided to as well. “I am too. Attracted to you. Sometimes I stay a bit late at the pharmacy so I can lock up at the same time as you. You keep a tight schedule.”

The alpha behind me laughed and rested his chin on my shoulder. “I do. I look forward to seeing you as well. I never knew what to say before.”

We let our admissions hang between us. He pulled me in closer, and I accepted his warmth. My rabbit purred, knowing that this was right. I needed this alpha. Fate had finally smiled on me.

The coffeepot sputtered and bubbled, letting me know the pot was done. “Coffee?” I asked.

“Let me.”

He got up and deposited me into the chair that still held his heat. He filled two cups and I instructed him on where the sugar and creamer were. We stirred our coffee until it was just right and I brought over his plate of cookies. “The banana bread? Was it you?”

Danny sighed and shook his head. “It was me. My wolf, well, it was a way we could make sure you had something good to eat without being alpha enough to come over here and tell you how much I care about you. Sounds silly now.”

“Not silly,” I said, placing my hand over his. “I secretly wished it was you. That you were bringing me gifts to show you cared.”

Daniel shrugged one shoulder and offered me a cookie.

I took a bite. Dark chocolate and walnut. Two of my favorite flavors.

“I should’ve just come over and told you.”

“I could have as well. Maybe it’s perfect timing. We’ll make up for lost time. Why did you decide on the cookies? They’re delicious, but I miss my banana bread surprises.”

“I thought maybe, after our argument, you might not want them anymore.”

I shook my head. “Not true. I want them more now that I know they are from you.”

That made the alpha smile, and I promised myself to do whatever it took to make those smiles a regular part of his life. Making him happy clicked into place as my new priority.

I checked the time and groaned. “I’ve got to get ready for work, as much as I don’t want to go anywhere.”

Danny turned his arm and mimicked my groan. “Duty calls, I suppose. I’m glad I came over this morning.”

“Me too.” Neither of us moved to go even though we both needed to. This was hard. No one should have to work minutes after finding out the person they were yearning for yearned for them right back. “What do we do now, alpha?” I tested out the word, eager to find out how it affected him.

“Oh, that was mean. Now I have to go to work after hearing you call me that.”

“Not sorry.”

“Don’t be. Here’s what I propose…I want to take you on a date. Dinner at my house? Tomorrow night?”

“That sounds perfect. I’ll be there. Anything I can bring?”

We stood at the same time. Work was the worst. He stepped toward me and pulled me in for another knee-melting kiss. “Bring yourself. That’s all I need, omega.” He waved goodbye and winked at me.

We might’ve wasted some time admitting our feelings, but we were making up for it now. “Wait!” I rushed to the door and opened it. He paused on the bottom step. “What about our fight? I don’t want to fight with you anymore.”

He cocked his head to the side. “No business talk during our date. Easy fix.”

“Okay. I might come over later for my lunch break.”

The alpha beamed. “Please do. I can’t wait to see you again.”
