Daniel

Maybe shifters did move fast. I’d just been mistaken about when that speed triggered.

In my dads’ case, it was at first sight.

For my mate and I, it took a bit longer, but from the moment I brought the cookies to his home, everything kicked into gear.

I’d been baking banana bread and sneaking it into his mailbox for months while we sparred and to all appearances disliked one another.

Neither of us willing to accept what we already knew to be true.

Fated mates, dancing around one another, not ready.

Maybe the timing just wasn’t right. But I didn’t want to put too much thought into it because whatever weirdness had held us back, however our stubbornness had gotten in the way, once we passed it, everything changed.

After the first couple of nights together at my home, Mav returned to his, but halfway through the night, he called and asked if he could come over, and instead, I went and got him.

After that, we didn’t even pretend to try to stay apart.

But it was a few months before we made it official.

Many tourist towns died as the days grew shorter, but ours actually seemed to get busier.

The harvest festival was followed by various other events marking the season, and local businesses, including ours, took part, but finally having to go home to get things he needed or to pick up his mail got onerous.

“Are you sure you want to move into my little place?” I asked for the hundredth time. “Yours is so much newer and nicer.”

He handed me a box marked bedroom . “And yours is home.” Turning, he returned into the house, leaving me to put his box into the pickup truck I’d borrowed for the day. We were moving all the small items, and a mover would be by for the furniture later on that day. “How much room is left?”

“A lot.” I climbed into the bed and moved the cartons around.

He’d insisted on the better deal we got by using the movers only for the big pieces, but I had arranged with them to haul whatever else we needed for an additional fee.

My omega had a bigger home, and going from that to a smaller one might be a challenge.

Reaching down, I took an armload of clothing on hangers and laid them carefully on top of a row of boxes.

“I’m so glad you’re going to be officially living with me now. ”

“If we ever get all this done,” he grumbled. “I don’t know how I managed to get so much stuff. It didn’t seem like it when I moved here.”

“Did you want to take what we have and come back tomorrow afternoon?” We could always make a second run after work—or let the movers handle it.

“No, we’ll be tired after work. I’m just grouchy because I don’t feel like I need it all, and I should have taken the time to sort through things before today.”

“You just didn’t want to give up a moment of cuddle time,” I teased. “But it’s okay. You can sort when you unpack. You didn’t think things out when you moved here?”

“No. The opportunity to buy the drugstore came so suddenly, I just stuffed everything into boxes, bags, and whatever and had it all delivered here. That’s how I know how expensive it was moving everything I own.”

“We will be donating a lot of my furniture anyway, so we can just add whatever you don’t want anymore.

” I reached down to kiss him on the forehead.

“You know, I’ve wanted to remodel since I moved back here.

Most of the stuff in the house has been there since I was a toddler, and it’s time for it to find a new home. ”

“I like your things,” he protested. “We’re keeping the blue sofa, for sure. It’s one of the most comfortable I’ve ever sat on.”

“Okay, but most of it has to go.”

“Won’t your fathers mind? It’s theirs right?”

“Mind?” I chuckled. “When I asked them if they wanted me to keep any of it for them, they were shocked that I hadn’t gotten rid of all of it in favor of something more modern long ago.” I hopped down and gathered him close. “They can’t wait to meet you.”

“And me them, even if I am a little nervous.” He shivered. “What if they realize I’m not good enough for you?”

I gave him a little slap on his fanny. “Don’t talk about my omega that way. Once they meet you, they’re going to realize I’m not good enough for you and probably tell you to run away while you can.”

He snuggled closer. “I guess they’ll have to accept Fate’s choice for both of us.”

“They’ll love you.” They already did. “When I called to tell them about you, they said they could hear how much happier I sounded and are giving you full credit.”

He tipped his face up, grinning at me. “Finally, I’m being appreciated.”

I kissed him then, until we were both breathless, before setting him away from me. “Don’t you be distracting me, you naughty omega. We have work to do before I can truly have you in my den and at my mercy.”

He giggled but followed me back inside for more boxes of his belongings.

By the time we had the pickup filled and unloaded at the other end, Mav was tired enough to agree to let the movers bring the rest, and I called to let them know.

We shifted things into the rooms where they belonged, but unpacking would have to wait for another day.

By the time the movers brought their load, it was almost impossible to move through the rooms, but we both had a heavy week ahead of us, and unpacking and getting things ready for the donation truck would have to wait until the following Sunday.

That truck would come the next day. Then we could start to be comfortable again.

But it didn’t matter. Because we were together.

Under one roof.

Blessed by the Goddess.
