Maverick
My phone blared somewhere in the room. My alarm. It felt like we’d just gone to sleep a few hours ago. Because we had.
Apparently, what was between us had come to a head in an explosion of passion that took several rounds of lovemaking to somewhat extinguish. And I had a feeling we were nowhere near done yet.
I threw my legs over the side of the bed and followed the sound. Our clothes were strewn all over the floor, and I found my pants, including my phone, somehow tossed into the bathroom. I’d gotten it out and silenced the alarm when another alarm rang out on the other side of the room.
“Damn. I really had to own my own business,” Daniel said, huffing and puffing in anger as he got out of bed and turned his own alarm off.
I laughed at the two of us. This would be our life now. Getting up early. Working for ourselves. Alarms. Working. And more working.
“What are you laughing at?” he asked, joining me.
“Look at us. We’re up before the crack of dawn, both naked, and we can’t call in sick or play hooky. No matter how much I want to.”
“People need their medicine,” he said, trailing his warm fingers down the side of my face. His eyes landed on my mark before he leaned down and pressed his lips to the sensitive scar that claimed me as his. He had one as well, but his was on his hip.
“People need their milk and eggs and bread,” I replied. “And I don’t like to call people in on their days off to cover my shifts.”
He sighed. “If we hurry, we can take a shower and have some breakfast.”
“No funny business in the shower,” I warned.
“Me? Funny business? Never ever.” He moved his mouth to suckle at the most sensitive part of my neck.
I moaned in response.
“Oh, omega mine. Who’s naughty now?”
“It’s me,” I admitted. “I’m thinking about all kinds of things.”
My second alarm blared, reminding me of my responsibilities. Damn it all.
“It’s okay. We have all the time in the world. Tomorrow we can sleep in. Your store is closed and mine is fully staffed. That will have to be our couple’s day. Where no one needs us but each other.”
I pulled back, arching a brow. “Bold of you to assume I’m spending the night again.” I’d discovered the night before that Daniel liked a bit of a challenge in the bedroom. Sometimes it earned me a slap on the ass. I didn’t complain. Smart Fate not to give me an alpha who wanted a wussy omega.
“Is it? I think you really, really want to be in my bed tonight, Mav.”
“Only if you make me dinner again.”
“Deal. Now, let’s get cleaned up.”
Turned out, to my chagrin, the shower was just that.
Washing each other’s hair and bodies but nothing else came of it.
We had things to do. Danny let me borrow some clothes for the day.
Everyone would know. The shifters would, at least. But that was fine with me.
I was over-the-moon happy about belonging to Daniel.
We still didn’t speak of the chips and pain relievers, but it was something we’d have to get over. There were more important things at stake now.
“I made you a coffee to go and a quick breakfast sandwich. And I packed leftovers for your lunch.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. “What?”
“What do you mean?”
“You made me coffee and breakfast and lunch?” I leaned down to tie my shoes, but I knew that he would see the tears falling.
“Mav, what is it? Sweetheart, is something wrong? Are you sore? Did I hurt you?”
“No. None of that.” I stood to my full height and accepted his generosity. His care. His concern. His love in the form of food. “It’s a lot all at once, and I didn’t expect you to be so loving. You’re a good alpha. Thank you.”
He kissed the tip of my nose and then my mouth. Thoroughly. “I’ll take care of you. No matter what. You can count on me, Mav. You’re not alone anymore.”
Well, that brought on a new flood of tears. “I’m so glad it was you. The banana bread. All of it. I’m so damned happy it was you.”
“I’m not sad about it, either. I’ll see you later today. If you’re lucky, I might sneak over and steal a kiss.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. Now, go before I change my mind and no one gets medicine today. It’s cold season, after all. I’ll bet you’ve got a line already.”
He wasn’t wrong. The onslaught of the cooler weather meant people were snuggling in for the season and spending more time indoors, especially the hibernating shifters.
That meant recycled air and shared germs. I’d ordered plenty of medicines to combat them, but rest and hydration were what they ultimately needed. “See you later.”
I walked the short distance to the pharmacy but before I opened the back door, Danny was on my heels, kissing me once more, grumbling about finding more help.
The day went by so slowly. All I wanted to do was shut the doors and call it quits.
Shifter matings were strong and powerful, and all my rabbit wanted to do was bask in our love and experience more of the night before.
Fucking like rabbits wasn’t just a saying.
He was insatiable for his alpha, as I was.
It was almost lunchtime when my cashier came in, and I slipped to the back room to heat up my lunch. There was a note inside that read, I don’t care about the chips or the candy bars. Not the sodas either. Or the sandwiches (yes I saw those). As long as I have you, you can sell whatever you want.
I chuckled, clutching the note to my chest. A glimpse into what life would be like with Danny as my mate and I was all in.
Now, I had to do something special for him. I got out my phone and texted him. Let me cook tonight. It’s my turn.
He sent me a smiley face. Okay. But the guy who sells the groceries is a big flirt. He might try to kiss you.
This wolf.
I’ll let you know.
I ate my alpha-packed lunch with gusto and got back to work. In between customers, I got on the internet and figured out the perfect menu for dinner. Stuffed pepper soup and garlic bread. It could simmer on the stove while we did…other things.
A half hour before closing, I called it a day. I did that sometimes, but today I had good reason. Except when I went shopping for the meat, peppers, and bread, Danny wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
“He went home early. Something about baking for his mate.” The cashier was a younger male. Squirrel shifter if my nose was correct, which it usually was.
“Is that right?” My face instantly heated up.
“Is it you?” He blushed. “I mean, are you Danny’s mate? He said he’d met his mate, and you smell like him. I’m sorry if I’m being too forward and nosey. I do that sometimes.”
“You are fine. And yeah, it’s new but yes.”
The young man blew out a breath. “I’m glad it’s you. You’re nice to my mom. You gave her medicine for free once. It really helped us out. And Danny helped us with groceries while she was sick. Two really good people are mated now, if you ask me.”
“Thank you.” I picked up my bags and all but sprinted to Danny’s house. I couldn’t wait to see him again. What was only twelve hours felt like a year. A decade even.
“There you are,” he said, coming out of the back room. “I’ve been waiting for you.” He took the groceries from my hands. “No funny business from the owner of the grocery store?”
“No. He was a no-show. Better things to do than to see his omega.”
“Oh? Like coming home and washing all his omega’s clothes and drawing him a bath and baking him not one but three loaves of banana bread? Such a negligent alpha.”
“You did?”
“I absolutely did. Go on while the water is still hot.”
I grabbed him by the collar and kissed him like it might be the last time. “I’m never letting you go. Fair warning.”
“Good thing because I’m not letting you go either.”
