Remedi
A couple weeks later
E ver since Khalif and I had sex, it’s like it’s all we’ve been doing.
Don’t get me wrong, we’ve spent time doing other things, but we just couldn’t keep our hands off each other.
I’ve started staying the night over with him and Khali.
She was loving having me there with her.
Today, she was at school, and I decided to take the day off from work to lie around the house with Khalif.
Unfortunately, he had to get up and handle some business with work and said that he was coming back in a couple of hours.
My phone vibrated on the nightstand. Reaching over, I grabbed it to see who it was.
Unknown: Tick tock bitch.
He didn’t even have to say who he was, because I already knew.
The guy didn’t give me a name. I’d been searching into Mike’s family and associates, and it came up that he has a brother named Mitchell, and as soon as I went on Mitchell’s page, I recognized him.
This mufucka is trying to extort me, and there’s absolutely nothing that I can do about it.
I placed my phone back on the nightstand and got up from bed.
Exiting the bedroom, I went out to the porch to see if Khalif was still gone.
When I didn’t see his truck, I came back in the door and was greeted by the camera in the corner of the hallway.
I’m not sure how I’m supposed to find a safe when he has cameras everywhere.
At first, when Mitchell came in there talking that bullshit about helping him rob Khalif, I wasn’t with it.
What really bothered me was the fact that he brought Khali into the shit, and she didn’t have anything to do with this.
She’s just an innocent child that he’s trying to harm out of his own greed.
If I were a safe, where would I be?
He’d probably have it in his bedroom, which I have no reason to go into.
If I did walk in there, he’d probably see me on the camera and have something to say.
Every time I stayed the night, we were sleeping in the guest bedroom.
It’s understandable that he doesn’t want me in his bedroom right now.
It’s a sacred place that he shared with Simone.
The sound of a car approaching let me know that I didn’t have time to look for a safe right now. He’ll have to give me a bit more time.
Trekking back into the bedroom, I grabbed my phone and shot him a text back. Haven’t found it yet. Need more time. Don’t text back.
When I didn’t hear Khalif enter the house, I went back to the porch to see what he was doing. Attached to the back of his truck on a trailer were two black ATVs.
“I thought you said you had to run off to do some work?” I asked with my right hand resting on my hip.
He looked over at me as he loosened one of the ATVs and said, “I did. I picked these up along the way home. Wanna give ’em a try?”
I’ve never in my life ridden one of those before. “I don’t know.”
“It’s just like driving a car.”
Mitchell’s bitch ass popped back into my mind.
I remembered how he said that Khalif had a drug farm, and it seemed like the only way I’d find out was if I got on one of those things, so I said, “I’ll try it.
” I hated how I was lying to him and sneaking around behind his back, but I was doing what’s best for Khali.
I’d never forgive myself if something happened to her.
If he couldn’t forgive me for doing what’s best for his daughter, then I don’t know what to tell him.
I went back into the house to put my clothes on. I’d been lounging around in my panties and one of his t-shirts. When I got back outside, he’d already unloaded the ATVs. This man has been talking me into doing all sorts of things I wouldn’t normally do.
“Do I need a helmet or something to drive this?” I asked when I approached him.
“Not really, but if you want one, I can give you one.”
“I think it’ll be much safer if I put a helmet on.”
Reaching into the bed of the truck, he pulled out a black helmet and handed it over to me. “I think it’ll fit.”
Getting into the ATV, I placed the helmet on my head.
“How do I turn it on?” He started it for me, and I wasted no time pulling off on his ass.
If I was going to find this so-called drug farm, I was going to have to do it without him.
If he was riding with me, I’m sure he would’ve told me which direction I need to go in.
Just as Mitchell said, I drove past the stables and kept riding for about ten minutes, but I didn’t see anything but an open field.
“That nigga lied. I should’ve known he was lying,” I said out loud and kept riding.
I came to some trees and a dirt trail in between them.
After taking the trail for five more minutes, I was about to turn around ’til I saw something in the distance that looked like a fence.
Stopping the ATV, I got off and walked over to the fence.
It was locked, but that wasn’t about to stop me from seeing what was on the other side.
Tossing the helmet, I lifted one of my legs over the fence and could hear Khalif’s ATV approaching in the distance. If I wanted to see what was on the other side, I was going to have to hurry up.
I jumped over the fence and walked on the opposite side of this black barn and stopped. In front of me were miles of weed plants and some other plant as well. “He wasn’t lying,” I whispered to myself.
“What are you doing?” I jumped at the sound of Khalif’s voice.
“Khalif, what’s this?” I peered up at him, eyes searching his for answers.
“You shouldn’t be over here.” He gripped me by the forearm and pulled, but I snatched away.
“No. Tell me what this is. I don’t understand.”
“This doesn’t have nothing to do with you.”
“I know, but is this why Beauty was sick?”
His head lowered, and he scrubbed his hand down his face. “It ain’t nothing I’m proud of, but yeah. She broke the fence and got in here.”
“Why do you feel like you have the need to sell drugs? Because that’s what they are, right?”
“I don’t have to explain shit to you.”
“Wow. Okay.” I marched back around the barn, and he caught me by the wrist.
“Remedi, wait. I ain’t mean it like that.”
“No. You said it exactly how you meant it. It’s really none of my business, like you said.”
“Fine.” He released my wrist. “A couple years ago, right before Simone died, we were ’bout to lose the farm.
Creed came up with this bright ass idea that we can grow weed and cocaine and sell it.
We were already starting out with the mushrooms. Those were Simone’s idea.
They weren’t that big of a deal. People were still getting the hang of those being around, but the weed and cocaine was taking off in the city.
I supplied a demand and was able to save the farm.
After that, I started growing more and more and sending it out of town. ”
“You’re not afraid that you’ll get caught and taken away from Khali? She already lost one parent. Why even risk it?”
“We have a good plan in place. No one knows ’bout it. No outsiders anyway, except you.”
Wrong.
“As long as you keep yo’ fucking mouth shut, I don’t have anything to worry ’bout.”
“I think I’m going to head home.” Picking up the helmet off the ground, I placed it back on my head.
“Remedi?” He called out my name, and I looked over in his direction.
“Keep ya fucking mouth shut. You ain’t see nothing.
” From the tone of his voice, I knew he was serious.
Khalif seems like the type of person who wouldn’t play any games, especially when it came time for him to make it back home to his daughter.
He ain’t have to worry about me telling anyone what I saw here today.
I’m actually great at keeping secrets. Even my own.
That evening
I’d been thinking about what I saw at Khalif’s farm for the remainder of the day after I’d gone home.
He hadn’t reached out to me, which leaves me to believe that he’s probably upset or scared because he didn’t know if I was really going to keep my mouth shut about it.
I didn’t want him to be taken away from his daughter either, so he didn’t have to worry about that.
Khali deserves to have at least one of her parents in her life.
“What’s wrong with you?” Reese asked me from the doorway of my bedroom.
“Nothing,” I lied, not wanting to bring her into my drama.
“Uh-huh, sure. I’ll let you think that I believe that lie.” My eyes roamed her outfit. She stood there dressed in all black with a blue wig on her head that looked like she’d bought it from a costume shop. Definitely not your typical Reese outfit.
“And what do you have going on here?”
“I need a lil pick me up, so I was trying to see if you wanted to come and have a lil fun with me.” She tossed a purple wig onto my bed.
“What kind of fun requires me to look like I’m about to go trick or treating? Halloween is weeks away.”
“Are you coming with me or what?”
“Fine.” It’s not like I have anything else to do anyway. Getting up from the bed, I went and grabbed a pair of black leggings and a black t-shirt.
“I’ll be waiting for you in the living room,” she said and left the room. I got dressed and put on her purple bob wig. The shit looked a hot ass mess, but I went with it for now. Grabbing my phone and wallet, I left the room.
Reese sat in the living room with Prada in her lap. Even she had on a pink wig.
“Now you’re just taking things too far.”
“Relax. Prada isn’t going anywhere with us. She’s just gon’ get us caught anyway.”
“Why do I have a feeling that you’re about to have us doing something that’ll land us in jail?” My brow lifted, but she couldn’t see it because it hid behind the ugly ass bangs on this wig.
“Just come on. We’ll be back, Prada.” She nosey nuzzled her before placing her on the couch and lifting to her feet. I didn’t even do all that with Prada. Maybe that explains why she’d been spending so much time with Reese.
I followed her out the door and hopped into her truck. She backed out the driveway and drove for a good thirty minutes before she turned on a dirt road and cut her headlights.
“Are you going to tell me what’s going on? It’s too dark down here for you not to have any lights on. Are you trying to hit a deer or get us killed?”
“Relax. This is a private driveway. I can’t pull up with my lights on or else he’ll see me.”
“He?”
“Yeah. I owe this mufucka a hard time.” She eased on down the driveway, and that’s when I saw the house come into view. The bitch was huge. All the lights were damn near on inside. There’s a Chevrolet pickup truck and a Jeep Wrangler parked in the driveway.
“Whose house is this, Reese?”
“Creed’s.” Finally, an answer.
The truck stopped in the middle of the road.
I saw a brown micro pit bull running around the yard.
When it noticed the truck, it stopped and stared in our direction.
He barked ’til Reese got out the truck. She leaned down and clapped her hands, beckoning for the dog to come to her.
It ran full speed to her, and she scooped it up into her arms and brought it back to the truck.
Opening the back door, she placed the dog on the back seat and jumped into the driver’s seat.
Without a second thought, she pulled straight down the driveway and stopped directly behind Creed’s car.
Reaching into the back seat, she grabbed a bag off the floor and rested it between the seats.
I watched her as she opened that bag and displayed two cartons of eggs. “Help me egg his shit.”
“You mind telling me what he could’ve done to you for you to be out here behaving like this?”
“Just help me. I’ll explain later,” she said and got out of the truck with one carton in her hand.
Grabbing the other carton of eggs, I got out behind her. She wasted no time tossing the eggs against his vehicles, so I did the same.
“I can’t believe you really have me out here doing this.” I’ve never done anything like this in my life. Yeah, I’ve flattened a tire or two or maybe bust out a window, but egging? I didn’t really see the point in it, but I guess she wanted to do something that wouldn’t cause too much damage to him.
Reese lunged the final egg at Creed’s Jeep, and we ran back to her truck.
She backed out the driveway just as someone came out of the house.
I couldn’t see who they were because they turned ant-sized rather quickly.
The speed she was backing up was beyond over the speed limit.
I’m guessing that she didn’t want him to see her.
Soon as she made it to the end of the driveway, she whipped around and burned rubber to get away. I looked back and realized the dog was still in her back seat. “And what do you plan on doing with him?”
“I’m holding him hostage ’til he apologizes.”
“So you’re kidnapping?” We stared at each other and erupted into laughter. This was some insane shit.
When we made it back home, I slipped the wig from my head.
She grabbed the dog from the back seat and carried it into the house.
Prada barked her little ass off at that dog as Reese took it into her bedroom and closed it in.
Prada wasn’t too friendly when it came to other dogs.
Some humans she didn’t like as well. She’d turn like she was vicious if she felt like someone was a threat.
I tossed the wig onto the couch and picked Prada up to help calm her nerves.
She licked my chin as I carried her to my bedroom.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, I laughed, thinking about the crime I just committed with Reese.
It may have been insane, but it took my mind off the things that were happening.
“He ate my chicken salad,” Reese said from the doorway, gaining my attention.
“Are you serious? You did all that because he ate your chicken salad?”
“Damn right. He shouldn’t have touched my shit. He ate it on purpose. He saw my name on there. When I went to pick it up from Mrs. Redwick, he’d eaten all of it and left me with an empty container, so I had to get him back.”
“You’re crazy. You know that, right?” We both doubled over in laughter. I can’t even lie, I needed this.
