DOG

Stepping out of the shadows, I watch as my baby girl rides off on the back of another man’s bike.

I don’t know who he is or why she’s chosen to derail her life like she has, but I hope she has a good reason.

Her mother and I are worried, even if she stays in touch via text message, lying about all the places she’s visiting.

The shadows move next to me as Cahir comes to stand beside me, staring in the same direction as I am. Whatever is going on, it has to do with Cursed Skulls, that much we all know.

That he’s here confirms it.

Taking one last drag on the cigarette that I know Maggie will scold me for later, I flick the butt into the night, slowly exhaling, letting a plume of smoke escape.

Not turning my head, I ask, “Is my daughter going to be all right?”

He hesitates before answering, “I don’t know.”

My heart thunders in my ears when he doesn’t confirm that Bella will be okay. It may break Maggie and me if something happens to Bella. And her brothers will go on a rampage.

“Is her sacrifice worth it?” I want to know.

“It is,” he assures me before continuing, “She’s been trained, she has help, and she knows what she’s doing. We’ve covered her as much as we can, but the honest truth is that what she’s doing is dangerous, and while we see a lot, we don’t see everything.”

“I don’t like it, and if something happens to her, then I’m not holding her mother and brothers back,” I inform him, turning towards him.

“Understood, and you won’t be the only ones taking revenge if something happens to her,” he assures me.

I turn back towards the road and the taillights have long faded. When I turn back towards him, he’s gone.

“Fuck,” I whisper, raking my hand down my face and saying a brief prayer that my daughter is kept safe.
