Page 60 of Ruining Him
And who I see is not a killer.
“Through here,” I murmur and pull Cole through a park. It’s dark, so I can’t see much, but the lights from the street make a little of what’s ahead visible.
It’s your standard play park, with swings and a slide and some sort of climbing apparatus.
“What are we doing? I’m not about to fuck you on the slide, if that’s what you’re after.”
“Shut. Up,” I say through gritted teeth as I pull him across a small field and to a more wooded area. I’ve walked through this place before. The farther you go, the farther you get from civilization, where there’s nothing but trees and a lake.
“Seriously Lana,” he says in hushed whisper. “What’s wrong?”
The joking in his tone is gone now, since I guess he’s caught on to the fact that I’m on high alert.
“I just have a feeling.”
“A feeling?” he asks, and I look up at him. There’s a frown on his face and a tic in his jaw, though I’m not sure if it’s me he’s pissed at, or the situation.
“I’m sorry,” I admit, I never should have agreed to leave with him. I never should have allowed him into my life in the first place.
“What are you—fuck,” he yelps as something whizzes right by us.
No, not something.
A bullet.
Goddammit.
I squint and see three figures coming towards us, each of them with a gun in hand, pointed directly at us.
“You should go,” I say to Cole without taking my eyes off the guys.
“If you think I’m leaving you here, then you’re out of your damn mind.”
Why is he such a pain in the ass?
“You’re not an easy girl to track down, A,” a voice calls out, and my blood runs cold.
No one should know to call me that. The only people who did were my dad and his men.
Which means…
“Seriously? You agreed to take up a contract on me?”
I don’t even want tothinkabout what this means, because if a new contract has been put out, it means they know I’m here and I’m nowhere near ready to move on just yet.
The middle guy steps forward, and I recognize him as one of the guys I trained with, Dominic.
Charlie gasps from the corner of the room as I send my knife flying towards the target and hit it dead center.
I don’t know why he’s gasping; he’s seen me do it a hundred times before.
Probably something to do with the way Dominic is glowering at me from where he stands, his jaw clenched and his hands balled into fists at his sides.
I’m not sure what his issue is. It’s not my fault that he’s been at it all morning and couldn’t manage to hit a single target.
Knife throwing isnotin his wheelhouse.
He’s good with hand-to-hand combat, and his shooting skills aren’t half bad but strategizing and knife throwing are the two things holding him back from climbing up the ranks.
