Page 59 of Ruining Him
Whether I’ve told them what’s been going on between us or not, they still know that there issomething, and he should count his blessings that I know Lana won’t actually kill him for this.
I’ve figured out that she doesn’t get all stabby with innocent people.
I think.
“I asked you a question,” she insists, and he coughs a little before he starts to answer.
“Nothing. Nothing. Didn’t say a thing.”
She glares harder, staring into his eyes and I swear to God, I hear him whimper a little.
My best friend is afraid of my girl. How fitting.
Meanwhile, Logan watches on with a blank look on his face, and Noah looks like he wants to intervene but knows that he wouldn’t only be facing Lana’s wrath if he did, but mine too, if the way he keeps glancing from her to me is anything to go by.
“Enough,” I finally mutter. “Can we go now? I’m bored.”
Lana huffs but lets go of Harley—not without giving him a little shove in the process, though, and chuckling to herself as he leans back against the wall to catch his breath.
“Jesus,” he wheezes. “You’re both as crazy as each other. I’ve been in the same room as both of you twice, and each time I’ve ended up pinned by one of you.”
“That speaks more about you and your actions than it doesabout them,” Logan grunts and turns to his phone, seemingly done with the entire conversation.
“Right, I’m out of here,” I announce to anyone who actually bothers to listen.
Once we’re outside, Lana turns to me.
“Your friends are assholes.”
“Of course they are. I wouldn’t be friends with them if they weren’t.”
THIRTY-FOUR
LANA
Itake a deep breath as we pass through the iron gates that surround the campus.
It was only a few hours ago that Dare told me I needed to stay within the campus for my own safety, and normally I wouldn’t go against anything he asked me to do.
But I seem to be doing a lot of things I wouldn’t normally do lately, and it all comes down to the guy walking beside me.
Besides, I’m not the type to back down from a fight. I’d just rather not get Cole mixed up in any more of my messes.
He’s seen enough of my shit to last a lifetime.
But I know in my gut the closer we get to the church that this is a bad idea.
My fight or flight instincts are firing on all cylinders, andfuck,I need to get Cole out of here before something bad does go down.
Last time, we got lucky.
I’m not counting on that happening twice.
Sure, Cole can fight.
But he’s never killed before, and I’m not sure he’d be able to take that step, even if it was a life or death situation.
I see him. I see who he is under the mask and the bravado.
