“Relax. We’ll get him,” Quinn assured. “Every officer in the state is on the lookout for him, including airport and maritime authorities. We froze his bank account and credit cards. With no money, and no place to go, he’s bound to resurface soon.”
“And until then?” Ellie huffed. “What? We just wait?”
“Strategically,” Quinn nodded. “Proactively. Do you have an update on Dr Elliott?”
“Janet said they might start to bring her back tomorrow. She’s doing well.”
“Excellent.”
“I also spoke to Hayes’s fellow students who’ve gone on to graduate from medical school. One of them told me that he got pretty aggressive with her one day when she refused to have sex in one of the on-call rooms.”
“Physically aggressive?”
“No, or she’d have reported him, she told me. But he hurled a load of abuse at her and told her that she’d regret it one day. She said he was cold as ice and scary.”
“Okay, where is this woman now?”
“In Montreal, Canada.”
“Far enough away. Good.”
“Yes. I checked on the other two women in the class. One’s in Florida, the other moved to pursue a surgical career in Texas. I told them all what’s going on here, and not to worry too much about it, but to stay aware.”
“You did well. Um…”
Ellie knew the second Lia must have appeared at the door, just from catching the shift in her lieutenant’s expression. Quinn went from attentive and serious to relaxed and smiling in a split-second. Now, Ellie understood the feeling.
“Sorry to interrupt,” the dark-eyed reporter smiled. “Hi, Ellie, it’s good to see you.”
“You too, Lia.”
“Come in,” Quinn invited as she stood up. “We were just wrapping up here.”
Ellie politely averted her gaze when she kissed her wife.
“How’s your hotshot marine?”
“Still as hot, thanks,” Lia grinned.
The two chuckled at some private joke before Quinn turned back to her with a smile.
“It’s late, rookie. Is Janet still on shift?”
“Yes, she is.”
“Are you going to catch up with her now?”
“Yes, Lieutenant.”
“Perfect. See you tomorrow.”
???
Ellie knew the uniformed officer who guarded the door, and he watched her approach with a hopeful smile.
“Everything alright, Brett?”
“All is well,” he assured her. “Hey, if you’re going in, mind if I take five?”
