When she finally sighed, I bit back a triumphant smirk. “Fine. He told me what he wanted to do to me.” She closed her mouth quickly, silencing the rest of the truth I needed so desperately to hear, and anger pulsed in my veins.

“And?” I growled.

“And… I don’t want you to get angry.”

I shook my head. “Too late for that, my love.”

“He…” She frowned, searching my gaze. “Don’t get mad and leave me lying here.”

My jaw clenched. I couldn’t promise anything, but I gave her a curt nod.

“He slapped my breast… told me he wanted to…break me.” She sucked in a breath. “Said there wouldn’t be anything left of me… for you.”

Her voice caught on the words and my heart beat madly against the cage of my ribs. I closed my eyes as my blood turned to acid in my veins, then I released her throat so fast you’d think I’d been burned.

“Cabot.”

I shook my head, eyes still closed. She’d asked me not to get mad and leave her laying on the ground, but I knew better than to have my hands on her when I was this angry. I rose quickly to my feet, putting distance between us as I backed away from her. “Give me a moment.”

She huffed. “I knew you’d do that.”

I tightened my hands in my hair and turned toward her. “I’d like to hurt someone right now.”

She stood slowly, keeping her gaze on mine. “I handled it.”

I barked out a laugh. “I highly doubt that you did.”

She put her hands on her hips, indignance evident in her stance and the fierce glare she shot me. “What, like I can’t handle myself?”

“Oh, no, Rylan, I have complete faith in your capabilities.”

She stepped toward me and I stepped back.

She huffed again in annoyance. “Then what do you mean?”
