Jake leaned forward and tented his hands in front of his mouth. “We can send her to our satellite office in the Bahamas or open a new one in another country.”
Noah blew out an agitated breath, which did nothing to settle the emotional tornado in his brain. “She’d be online, though. We can’t make security tight enough for him not to find her the moment she logs on. Could we beef up security here in New York and buy her out of the illegal stuff? How about we give her the money to pay him off and be out of debt?”
“We can give her the money up front today. She can pay Symphis off. See how he reacts. Maybe he’ll let her leave.”
“This is how I lost Kaleb.”
“We’re doing everything we can to keep her safe. We can use the press to make her known. We can make it clear she’s not on drugs so they can’t use a heroin OD. We can hire security. Whatever it takes. We won’t leave her out there, dangling.” Jake paused. “Tell me what the hell you did.”
“I crashed her date.”
“Tori had a date? I thought you and her weren’t fake? That she was really into you.”
“Me too, but when she called me to confirm she’d show up today she was pissed. Made it clear we were broken up.” He covered his face. “I must’ve done something or said something stupid. For the life of me I can’t figure out what.”
Jake put a hand on his back. “You know I have your back no matter what happens. Always, man.”
Sam walked in, bouncing like a beagle who’d just been given his favorite treat. “I traced the cell phone call. It’s kind of fun to be able to have FBI access to dig through phone company records.”
“Who was it?” Noah asked.
“An entry level hacker in Tribeca. The FBI pulled him in for questioning a few hours ago based on my information. I waited to report to you to find out if my trace had been right. It was. The guy claims Symphis forced him to patch him through on the phone. That he threatened to alert the government his Green Card expired. Like Tori, he doesn’t know who Symphis is or where he lives. But he did have a more direct email account for him that he communicated.”
“You’re on it?” Noah trusted Sam’s ability more than anyone in the FBI.
“Of course. I’ll let you know more toward the end of the day. But I think I’ve narrowed his location down to Jersey City.”
