One more taste was the path to a steady spiral downward into losing any ability to stay away from him.
Yet, not diving into him now was hard.
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath.
He touched the side of her face, sliding hair away from her eyes. Goosebumps erupted down her arms. Cupping her neck, his opposite hand twisting gently into her hair, he pulled her head back and leaned in, pressing his lips to hers.
Scooting closer, she wrapped her arms around him, her fingers digging into his back as he deepened the kiss. So intense with each thrust of his tongue, each mingling of their lips. Every intake of a desperate breath had her falling into the abyss of the unknown.
She pulled away. “Slow down. That’s what we need. I mean, the kisses are…” She blinked up into his confused and disappointed face. “Wow. But…”
He whispered, “I want to make love to you more than I want to breathe right now.”
She shivered as the answeringme toofought to be vocalized. “This has to be the product of us forced together. Let’s remember why we’re here. Your brother’s death. The future of gaming. Me getting out of the Stadium and not dying. Stopping Symphis.” When he didn’t seem convinced she added, “We’re not even really dating.”
“This whatever it is has nothing to do with all that. It didn’t in the jail. There’s something real going on here.”
A noise came from outside the room. Both of them froze.
She whispered, “Who’s out there?”
“Maybe Tom. Meeting, remember?” He straightened his clothes, swiped a hand across his lips to remove all lipstick remnants, and combed his fingers through his hair. He still looked like he’d been doing far more than playing video games.
“Do I look acceptable?” She wiped a finger over her lips.
His look wasn’t reassuring.
“For God’s sake, it was just a kiss. We can’t have done that much damage. Maybe I could slip out a back door. I should skip this thing with the FBI. Can’t you give me the summary tomorrow or whenever we go on a date again?”
As they rounded back into Noah’s office a surprised male said, “Oh my God. Tell me you two weren’t…”
