Page 52 of Off Her Game
“Let’s quit.” She shut off the game.
Wait…no. I didn’t mean stop. The last time he’d gotten hooked on a new game written by someone other than him had been years. Shocker number two was him being into a fantasy game. Usually, witches and magical bullshit with ever-changing rules drove him berserk, but the rules of her world made sense.
“What’d you think?” She was back to chewing on her lower lip.
“I didn’t want to stop playing. I liked it, but I think I’m biased because I like you. You okay if I show it to Jake and get his opinion?”
She sighed and shook her head. “Noah, we’re dating. Even if it’s not real to us, to everyone else it is. If you suddenly develop my game, then it’s an obvious leap to assume I slept my way into getting your attention. That’d be feeding the misogyny of the entire thing. I can’t do that. I think it’d be smarter for me to walk with it. To do it on my own elsewhere. Maybe take it to Mongo Kats. I thought about them because they’re an all-women organization, but this isn’t really their kind of game.”
He closed his hand around hers. “It’s good work.”
“Forget about the game.” Her eyelids drooped to half-mast. She moistened her lips.
Looked like she wanted him to kiss her. Did he go in for it? Or wait. What if it’s not about being kissed?
“You like me?” she asked.
“God, yes.” That came out a little too desperate. Very uncool.
She leaned in to press her lips to his. She pulled back to whisper. “I want to feel alive. Kiss me.”
Yes, ma’am. Clear direction. That he could handle.
