The sheen turned into a few tears. “That sounds really good. Maybe a fenced in yard. For the dog and maybe…a kid?”

My chest ached because I could see the future for the first time in a long damn time. “That sounds even better.”

I pulled her back outside and turned back to the house. “Bye, Milligan.”

Thanks for pushing me, man.

I didn’t hear his voice back this time.

Maybe even my subconscious knew I didn’t need it anymore.

I took her hand as we went down the stairs and to the wide open future that we’d figure out together.
