Page 70 of Nails
“Why are you laughing?I think you have a little green monster running through you, too.”
“What do you mean?”
Nails smirked.“Two words…lady friends.”
Oh damn! She thought to herself. He caught on to it.Yes, she had thrown that in there because she was a little envious of those who got a piece of something she couldn’t have.
“Judging from your silence, I’m guessing that I’m right.”
“Nails—”
He stepped closer and placed his finger over her lips, silencing her.
“I don’t want to hear any more excuses, Riley. We both know what we want.”
And damn it, she knew he was right. The pull between them was like a live wire.It was too strong to keep pretending it wasn’t there. Her resolve started to waver as the voice in her head that was warning her about distractions was drowned out by the heat in his eyes. She was ready to give in, just this once, to stop thinking and let herself have what she wanted.
As Nails leaned in, she closed her eyes. She knew he was close because she could feel his warm breath against her lips.
But then suddenly, something shifted inside her, and it wasn’t good.A wave of dizziness slammed into her so hard she had to grab onto Nails’ arm just to keep herself upright. What followed next sent a jolt of panic straight through her.
Scorching heat surged beneath her skin, racing through her body like wildfire. She fumbled for the zipper of her hoodie, desperate to get the damn thing off.Her fingers felt clumsy, and she felt like the zipper kept slipping out of her grip.Every movement took more effort than it should have, like her hands belonged to someone else. Her breathing became more rapid and uneven, which only stoked the fire already raging under her skin.
Her vision became blurry, and she felt as if the sidewalk started to tilt beneath her feet.Everything around her swayed like she was walking on the deck of a ship during a storm.
Nails’ voice cut through the haze, but she couldn’t focus on the words, only the urgency in his tone.
“Riley!Hey, look at me.What’s going on?”
As if she were moving in slow motion, she tilted her head to look up toward Nails’ voice. She tried to speak, but her tongue felt thick. Then she felt her legs begin to wobble, but Nails’ grip around her waist tightened instantly.
She wanted to answer, to tell him she didn’t know, but her thoughts were slipping like water through her fingers.Somewhere in the chaos of her mind, a single thought clawed to the surface—something’s happening to me.
Nails shifted, moving to support her fully, his arm coming around her, steadying her against him.“Stay with me, Riley,” he urged, but even his voice sounded far away now.
Her head lolled slightly, and she forced her eyes to meet his. However, even in her dazed state, she made out his broad shoulders and chiseled jawline. His dark T-shirt clung to him like it had been painted on, outlining every hard-earned muscle.
Suddenly, despite the panic screaming in her chest, her body reacted in ways she couldn’t control. She wanted him.
Sweet flaming hell, her foggy brain thought. If Thor and a tactical vest had a baby, it’d look like Nails.
“I want you,” she murmured.
“Shit.”Nails muttered.
Concerned wasn’t the right word to describe how Nails was feeling. He was fucking in a state of panic, which was strange for him, because in his line of work, he was trained not to panic.
His heart was racing as he held her against his body. She then pulled back just a tad and looked up at him.He swallowed hard as her striking blue eyes locked on his. However, that’s when he noticed it, realizing something was really wrong. The sharpness he knew so well wasn’t there. Her gaze was hazy, unfocused, and her pupils were blown wide.It was like she was staring past him at something that wasn’t really there.
She leaned more of her weight against him, and he adjusted his grip around her.But then she looked up at him again, and this time there was something else in her eyes.Heat.Want.The kind of look that could fry a man’s common sense in under a second.
“Riley…” he warned, already knowing where this was going.
“I want you,” she slurred as her fingers curled into his shirt like she was trying to pull him closer.
“Shit,” he muttered, knowing exactly what was in her system. And it wasn’t just making her dizzy and confused. It was lighting up every nerve she had.
Someone had roofied her.
