Chapter Fourteen

“So, how long is he going to stay here?” Sunny whispers in a not so quiet voice. “I mean, this is your apartment, but it’s kinda strange. I don’t mind staying with Cole for a while, but are you sure you can trust him? Are you sure he’s one of the good guys?”

Flora giggles. “He’s harmless. I don’t know why, but I just get the feeling he is. And this is your apartment too, you nincompoop. He’ll sleep on the couch for a little while until I get this straightened out with my uncle. And then he’ll be on his way.”

I stand still in the hallway, listening to the two girls talk. I already overheard the conversation with her uncle on the phone. Some yelling on her part, followed by the great District Attorney calmly pleading his case. Whatever he said somehow got through. She agreed to my protection.

It wouldn’t have mattered if she didn’t. I would have followed her anyway. As it was, I was thinking about refusing my cut from the Silver Snakes. This job had become incredibly personal in a short period of time.

I hear the door shut behind Sunny as she leaves. I’m glad she’ll be staying with her boyfriend for the next few days. My cock stirs as I think about being alone with my girl in this apartment for the next few nights. I struggle to remind myself that I’m here in a professional capacity.

Flora sighs as I come into the room. “I suppose you heard all that.”

I shove my hands in my pockets so that I don’t reach for her. She licks her lips and all I can think of is tasting them.

“I did. I can understand your friend wanting to protect you. I’m glad you have friends like her around.”

Her eyes mist over. “Yes, I’m very lucky in that respect. I haven’t always had friends like that.”

I cock my head to the side and study her. How could someone not want to protect this special beauty? I don’t get it.

Three hours later I’m still mulling over what could have happened in Flora’s past to make it so hard to trust someone. And what could have possibly happened between her and her uncle?

I did my research when I was assigned this job. Her parents passed in a car accident when she was a little girl and her uncle raised her from that point forward. It couldn’t have been easy for her and my heart aches thinking of the little blonde girl with big blue eyes all alone in the world.

I turn onto my side and struggle to get comfortable on the too-short couch.

Unfortunately, I understand way too much about growing up without anyone to care for me. My own mother died during childbirth and my military father blamed me for it from birth. He wasn’t a warm man anyway, but to me he could be cruel. That’s why I joined the Marines right out of high school.

The family that the Silver Snakes MC provides is something I was sorely missing growing up. Those men have my back and I have theirs. Thank God Tornado introduced me to the group after we were discharged.

I’m instantly on alert when I hear the rustle of sheets. My cock stirs as I think of Flora in the next room. Fuck, she’s beautiful and sexy.

“Levi,” she says softly.

I’m instantly on my feet and headed for her room. Whatever she needs, I’m here for her.
