Gabe

I blinked at what she’d written.

Love you.

Gretchen loves me?

If I were being honest, I think I loved her, too.

I was in the middle of typing back, “love you, too,” when my phone rang. It was her.

“Hello?”

“Before you go freaking out, I didn’t mean anything by that.” She didn’t let me get a word in while she continued on. “I’d just got done texting my mom and Laura and had closed with ‘love you,’ so it was a complete slip of the fingers to type that to you.”

Well, that wasn’t exactly what I was hoping she’d say. Thank god she’d called before I’d sent my return text.

I forced a chuckle.

“I’m not freaking out. I knew you didn’t mean anything by that. We agreed this was just until your Mr. Right or my Mrs. Right came along.”

Except, why did it feel like I was talking to my Mrs. Right?

“Or you finished my cabinets,” she clarified.

“Right. Whichever comes first.”

“Because we want different things.”

“Exactly.”

I couldn’t help but wonder… did we really though ?

“I’ll see you at the game later. Do they have snacks? I think Jake might get a little cranky if he doesn’t have something to eat before the game’s over.”

“They have a snack bar. We’ll get him a hot dog or a pretzel.”

“Okay.” There was a pregnant pause before she asked, “So, we’re good, right? You’re not freaked out? You know I didn’t mean anything by it.”

“We’re good, sweetheart. I know you don’t love me. I’ll see you tonight.”

Gretchen

Except I did love him.

And I had no one to blame but myself when my heart broke into a million pieces.
