Chapter twenty-eight
Dane
T he moment I hear Halle’s distress signal, I jump out of the car, Aiden right at my tail.
The police have yet to arrive, so it looks as if we are on our own as we sweep into the building.
This is just another shift. This building is on fire, and I am rescuing citizens from getting burned.
My Alpha leads me right into the heart of the building, and there I find her in the grip of one of the vilest Alphas I have ever seen.
My Alpha snarls, and then he aims his fist at the bastard, taking him out immediately.
Two others have Penn at knifepoint, but Aiden swoops in, taking out the one who has a blade to Penn’s throat with a swift kick to the crotch.
The other fumbles with his weapon, but Penn gets out of his bounds somehow, knocking the guy out with a butt to the head.
He must have found a way to loosen the knot when they weren’t looking, and now the three of us fight each Alpha from Pack Grim.
They truly weren’t a match for us after all.
Daryl tries to run, but Halle knocks him down with her entire weight, right into Lucia as the pair stumble.
Sirens blast outside, indicating help has arrived.
Cops storm into the building and hold Halle’s former pack at gunpoint, and then I watch with a dark satisfaction once they’re all led away in police cruisers.
Even watching Penn’s ex with her arms cuffed is a sight for sore eyes. She and Daryl are led away to another car.
It looks as if we arrived in the nick of time.
Now Halle rushes over to Penn, and he scoops her up in his arms, spinning her around.
“I told you not to come,” he scolds.
“And leave you behind? I don’t think so,” she scoffs.
The Alpha purrs, nuzzling his cheek with hers as he rubs his scent off on her.
Now I bundle her up in my arms, taking a moment to run my scent on her, too. My Alpha can’t help it. From the moment she disappeared into that building, he has been anxious.
But now that she is safe in my arms again, he can finally relax.
We can return home as a full pack, at last.
The moment Halle runs into Aiden’s arms, she goes ramrod straight. Aiden purrs. “Halle, are you—?”
He doesn’t finish his sentence as Halle keels over, and then when her perfume floods the area, blowing my way, my Alpha pauses.
Shit. What timing.
Halle has gone into heat.
It appears the stresses of the day have finally caught up with her.
