Chapter nineteen

Dane

T he moment we find Penn behind that dingy cell at the police station, Halle wiggles out of my grip, rushing straight to the bars. “Penn!”

He looks up the moment she says his name, and then he rises to his feet, moving straight toward her. “Halle.”

One moment, they’re gazing into each other’s eyes, then the next, they’re smooching through the bars. She even jumps up into his arms, letting him hold her up against the cell.

At least Halle’s face is small enough to fit through the bars. Penn struggles with his square jawline.

I roll my eyes. They need to get a room.

Or maybe their own private cell.

Still, never thought I’d see the day Penn would be behind bars, and I have to say, a life of crime suits him.

He's even ditched the tweed jacket and unbuttoned his shirt.

Who the hell is this Alpha?

He has a cut on his cheek, one Halle tends to immediately as she presses a sweet kiss to the wound.

Damn. I may have a scratch or two she can kiss. I bet her soft, pillowy lips would heal them in no time.

“My poor Alpha,” she breathes, kissing his cheek over and over, and I look at Aiden, regretting it at once.

The Alpha is pissed. At Penn or Halle, I can’t tell, but that is not a happy expression on his face.

“I swear, Halle,” Penn gasps between kisses. “No one will harm you again. That urine-smelling Beta at the bookstore is history …as well as your former pack…”

Halle freezes at the word ‘pack,’ staring at him in shock. “How…how do you know about my pack?”

Before Penn can open his mouth, Aiden warns him, “Penn…don’t.”

But Penn merely growls at the other Alpha. “No. No more secrets. She must know. They sent us a threatening note, but don’t worry, princess… They won’t come within an inch of you again. You are mine.”

Halle shuts her eyes, and I’m surprised her tear ducts haven’t dried up with all the crying she has done tonight.

She opens her mouth. “I’m sorry I lied to you. All of you.”

Penn purrs. “It’s okay, princess. I understand. You were afraid, but they will never harm you again.”

Now Halle cries against Penn as they still hug each other through the bars, and Aiden looks at me, shaking his head.

“This is a complete mess. Wait here with them while I bail him out,” he says.

And what, pray tell, am I supposed to do exactly? Ensure they don’t fuck in the jailhouse?

Once Aiden disappears to talk with the sheriff, I gaze back at Penn and Halle. He’s burying his nose in her hair, and he’s completely gone.

His pupils are blown, and it’s like he’s drunk on her.

Still, I can’t help but feel that green-eyed monster and a slight hint of betrayal.

I wouldn’t have minded if he had come to me first and asked to bite her, but the fact that he did it behind our backs hurts.

But seeing how happy Halle is in the arms of her Alpha chases all those negative feelings away. In the end, she is all that matters.

Because I swear, I am going to make her mine one day, too. Mark my word.

Halle will be mine.
