Raven

Hope you don’t have plans for tonight! Tonight, we’re going out for some sister bonding. Just your class and a handful of the sisters.

Sage

Meet us at the house at 7:00PM sharp.

Jk. But, if you’re not at the house by 7:30, we will leave you behind and you’ll have to find your own ride there.

Raven

Dress code is Dress to Impress

Sage

No dress code is Vegas Club Wear.

Maeve

Since you guys can’t make up your mind, wear what’s comfortable for you and what you would wear to party in.

Sage

What she said.

I have a couple of hours to get ready before I have to meet at the Kappa Theta Alpha house. I go to my closet and look through the options before quickly realizing that none of them fit what Maeve suggested. “Alex!”

My roommate comes running, poking her head into my room. “Is everything alright, Naomi?”

“You know about this sister bonding night, yes?”

She nods.

“So you must know the ‘dress code’ then? I have nothing that fits into that description.”

Alex steps into my room. “Are you asking me for what I think you’re asking me for?”

I sigh, flopping onto my bed. “I need you to take me shopping.”

Alex cheers. “Yes! I’ve been waiting for this since you moved in.”

“Really?”

“Absolutely! Naomi, I love you, but you dress like my grandmother. You have a bangin’ body, but your clothes aren’t doing you any favors.”

I playfully roll my eyes, but Alex was right. Almost everything I own was picked out by my mother at some point. “Well, we’ve got a couple hours before I have to be at the Kappa house. We are going to the mall and I am giving you free rein to put together five outfits for me.”

Alex was practically vibrating at this point, bouncing up and down because she was so excited. “Alright, I can be ready to go in fifteen minutes,” she says, running out of the room.

I laugh to myself, getting up to get dressed.

I throw on a pair of green joggers, a white T-shirt, and a pair of running sneakers.

I grab my crossbody bag and sling it across my chest, throwing my twists into a ponytail.

I meet Alex in the living room and we walk out to her car, heading to the mall.

“Come on, Naomi, let me see!”

“This was a mistake, giving you free rein. I feel naked.”

“You’re being dramatic, come on out!”

This was the fourth store we’ve stopped at, and everything has been way out of my comfort zone.

Alex convinced me to buy two outfits: a pink, satin, midi-length shift dress, a pair of navy paper bag pants, and a low-back yellow halter top.

Everything else though has been too revealing for my personal comfort, and even that halter top was pushing it.

For instance, the outfit Alex had me in now—a short, high-waisted, medium-wash denim skirt and a sheer, strapless, black, lace body suit.

The cups of the bodysuit were lined, thankfully, but between the boning and low neckline, this outfit left very little to the imagination.

I take a deep breath, stepping out of the dressing room stall to show Alex. “That’s cute!”

I look in the mirror, tugging at the hem of the skirt, knowing full well I can’t pull it down any further. “I’m uncomfortable,” I grumble.

“What part of it makes you uncomfortable? The body suit? The skirt?”

“Both.”

Alex thinks for a second. “Try the pants with this bodysuit.”

“Which ones? The brown leather or the black ones?”

“Brown. Those are the straight-leg ones, right?” I nod. “Then yes, those.”

I turn and go back into the dressing room, quickly shedding the skirt and putting on the brown leather pants. This pairing was actually really cute. And now that I had full-length pants on, I didn’t feel so exposed anymore. I walk back out of the stall, turning around for Alex.

“Better?” she asks, with a small, smug grin on her face.

“Much.”

“So, for you, stay away from short skirts, but you’re willing to take risks with the top? Got it. Don’t bother trying on the other stuff I gave you. I’ll be right back,” she says, heading back into the store.

I wait for a few minutes before she comes back with a new top, and a new outfit entirely. “Okay, try this top with the black leather pants, and then this outfit I think you’ll like.”

And Alex was right. These two outfits knocked it right out of the park.

Using the skinny-fit, black leather pants I already had in the dressing room with me and paired them with a cropped, puff-sleeve polka-dot top that ties in the back.

The last outfit was more casual: a short-sleeved, mint-colored button-down and heavily distressed boyfriend jeans.

Finally, we found the five outfits we came here for, and it only took two and a half hours.

After checking out at this store, we head home. Shopping took much longer than I thought it was going to, so we were cutting close if I wanted to have enough time to change and do my makeup before heading over to the sorority house.

Once we reach our apartment, I head to my room, throwing the shopping bags.

I grab the strapless, black, lace bodysuit and brown leather pants from the bag, changing out of my lounge clothes and into the outfit.

Then, I quickly do my makeup, adding a winged black liner and deep red lipstick to my usual mascara and cheek tint.

I put a few gold cuffs in my twists before grabbing my small, black leather crossbody, slipping on a pair of black leather pumps, and heading out.

Alex drives me to the Kappa Theta Alpha house. She wasn’t joining us tonight, but the sorority house was on her way to her boyfriend’s place. I thank her for the ride before heading inside the house.

“Damn, Naomi, that outfit is fire!” my pledge sister Kaylee calls out. I head into the kitchen where everyone’s gathered, waiting to head out.

Maeve’s jaw drops, seeing my outfit. “Alex convinced you to let her take you shopping, didn’t she?”

I laugh, fidgeting with my hands a bit. “I actually asked her to. I realized I didn’t have anything that fit the dress code.”

“Well, I think you look amazing,” Sage says from behind me, startling me. She comes around me into the kitchen.

“Back at you!” She looked stunning, as always. Sage was wearing a pair of black leather shorts, a red satin blazer with the sleeves pushed up, and a black bra top underneath, with over-the-knee black boots. I wish I had half the confidence she did.

“Okay, is everyone here and ready?” Maeve asks, looking around. It looks like it’ll just be the Beta Nu Class, Maeve, Raven, Sage, Theia, and Stephanie tonight.

Sage nods. “I think we’re just waiting on our ride at this point.”

“Ride?”

Raven grins. “Yep, our ride. You guys didn’t think we were just going to carpool to our destination, right? We said dress to party, and we don’t want anyone to worry about driving home tonight.”

“Don’t feel any pressure to drink if you don’t want to though. I’m not drinking and I think Theia’s staying sober tonight too,” Stephanie chimes in.

Theia nods in agreement. “I’m actually going to drive myself there, so if anyone needs to leave early for any reason, there will be alternate transportation available.”

“Technically, Kappa policy is not to drink in letters and not to sponsor alcohol-related events. The focus of tonight is not drinking, our event for tonight just happens to take place at a bar. So by all means, drink, don’t drink—just let loose and enjoy yourself,” Sage says, looking around at our group.

A hand shoots up, and of course it belongs to Pain-In-the-Butt Penny.

“You don’t have to raise your hand, Penny.”

She lowers it before speaking. “You guys still haven’t told us what we’re doing tonight.”

Sage and Raven look at each other, seemingly communicating telepathically. “I guess at this point, we can tell them what we’re doing,” Sage says.

“We are going to a bar! There’s a drag show happening at one of our favorite bars tonight, and we figured it’s the perfect way to let loose. We get to see the show, dance a bit, have some drinks and food, and spend time together as sisters.”

Maeve steps in close to me. “You’re okay with this, right? Going to a drag show, I mean,” she murmurs under her breath.

I shrug. “I think so? I’ve never been to one before,” I whisper back.

“Do you know what drag is?”

“Like RuPaul’s Drag Race, right? Never watched the show, but I’ve seen commercials, so I think I’ve got the gist.”

“Good. And if you ever feel uncomfortable, let Stephanie or Theia know, and they’ll get you back to the apartment.”

“I think I’ll be okay, but thank you for looking out for me, Maeve.” She leans in, giving me a small side hug.

There’s a loud honk from the street outside the house.

“And I believe that’s our ride!” Sage declares, ushering us all out into the front yard.

I follow the crowd, heading outside to see a party bus parked on the street in front of the house.

“Surprise!”

“All this for us?”

“Y’all will quickly learn KTA is over the top in the best way possible.”

We all make our way onto the bus, taking seats on the benches along the perimeter. There was a bar set up near the front and two poles in the middle of the bus. I end up sandwiched between Sage and Raven on the bench at the end of the bus .

While the bus is still parked, Maeve rounds the bus with a platter of clear shots, passing them out to each of us. “They’re tequila shots. If you want something else or just want water, let me know.”

Once everyone’s settled with their cups, Sage raises hers.

“I’d like to propose a toast. Don’t worry.

This will be the only time tonight I get sappy.

I’m not an emotional drunk.” She laughs.

“To the Beta Nu class. Each of you women are wonderfully unique and inspiring in your own way, and we’re so lucky to have you in this organization. ”
