AS SOON as I clicked Answer, Amy dove in.

“I have to see you. We need to talk.”

“Happy Holidays to you too, Amy. Happy New Year’s, while I’m at it. I must have missed your calls somehow.”

“That psychic. He knows , I tell you.”

Nothing changes. Sarcasm always went right over her head, even when we were students. Then her words struck home.

“Mitchell and Porter? They’ve been to see you?” I’d expected them to question Greg. That made sense. But Amy? Why her? Were they interviewing all Murphy’s coworkers?

Or had they already made the connection between—

I dismissed that idea. They couldn’t possibly have made that big a leap so soon.

“Three days ago. There was another detective with them.”

“And they haven’t been back since then?”

“No.”

I smiled. “Then it was nothing but a fishing expedition.”

“And what if he catches something? They’ve interviewed Jennifer too. And Greg. They’re just as nervous about this as I am. We should never have agreed to this.”

The fear curdling her voice made me sick to my stomach.

No fucking backbone.

“Hey, now you all get consciences, after I did all the dirty work? No, I will not meet you. Any of you. Not if they’re watching us.” I laughed. “Well, they’re watching you . They don’t know about me.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” Amy blurted. “They know I booked a table for five. They know someone else bought those tickets. Hell, they even asked Jennifer if she organized the camping trip.”

If Amy had done anything to cause me to show up on the police’s radar, her death would be painful.

And slow. Very slow.

“You didn’t mention me, though, did you?”

“No. None of us has breathed a word. That’s what I’m trying to tell you. We didn’t need to. They’re already talking about a mystery person. Christ, Jennifer thought they were going to drag her ass off to jail. This is getting scary.”

“And yet I haven’t had a call from Jennifer. You seem to be the only one who’s panicking.” I’d had enough. “Say. Nothing. That’s all you have to do. And don’t call me again, okay? Because if I see your number, I won’t answer.”

As soon as I hung up, there was only one thought in my head.

Can she keep her mouth shut?

I couldn’t be sure. And if it turned out she couldn’t, I needed to have a plan.

I wasn’t ready to end the game just yet.

My other game, however, was progressing nicely.
