“WE NEED to get up,” Gary said for what had to be the fifth time.

“Mm-hm.” Dan snuggled closer.

“I mean it.”

“Mm-hm.”

“We have a meeting with Travers at nine thirty. Remember?”

Dan let out a sigh. “You had to go and spoil things, didn’t you?” Then he craned his neck to peer at Gary, his eyes suddenly bright. “That gives us enough time to—”

His phone rang, and Gary chuckled. “Hold that thought.”

“I’d rather hold something else,” Dan muttered.

“You’re incorrigible,” Gary said as he grabbed his phone.

“Not incorrigible, just horny.”

“Well, you’re gonna have to wait a sec.” Gary frowned when he saw the caller was Riley. He clicked on Answer. “Bit early for you, isn’t it?”

“Boss….”

Gary stilled. “You haven’t called me that in a while. What’s up?”

“You need to come to the Anderson Memorial Bridge. A body’s been discovered in a rowboat.”

Gary frowned once more. “Why do you need me there? You deal with bodies all the time.”

Dan sat up, his face grave. “Whose body?”

Cold flushed through Gary.

“I’ve got my reasons, boss. ID says his name is Sean Nichols, but―”

“Oh God,” Gary croaked.

Riley’s breathing hitched. “You know him?”

“Yes, but I have no idea how you connected him to me.” He froze. “Isn’t that why you’re calling? Because I know him?”

“No, boss. I’m calling because this is another murder straight out of a thriller.” He paused. “And there’s more. There’s a note pinned to the body. It… it’s addressed to Dan.”

Ice filled Gary’s veins. “What does it say?”

“Do you like thrillers, Mr. Porter? I love them. Got a favorite? Maybe I’ll read it too—for inspiration.”

Gary had heard enough. “We’re on our way.” He hung up, then stared at Dan, his stomach churning. “It seems our killer isn’t finished.”

Dan was so still. “Who’s dead?”

Gary swallowed. “Sean. Same MO, Riley says.”

Dan gave a choked gasp; then his gaze locked on Gary. “And what is it you’re not telling me?”

“Seems as though we’re both getting notes from this guy.”

“Oh God.” Dan gave him a stricken look. “Gary, we have to catch this guy. First Brad, now Sean? He’s making this really personal.”

What concerned Gary was that it could also get dangerous.
