Mount Auburn Chapel

I HATE funerals.

All that emotion, all those tears….

I can’t remember the last time I cried. Or even the last time something really affected me. But I couldn’t miss this one.

Funerals were way more satisfying when I had something to do with the manner in which the deceased had shuffled off this mortal coil.

I was one of the last to arrive. I’d waited until the service was about to start. It was easier to watch the proceedings from the rear of the chapel. I’d spotted three of the others right away. I’d also noted they weren’t sitting together.

Then I saw Mitchell and Porter.

Still looking for me, gentlemen?

Keeping a straight face was so damn difficult, especially when I watched Porter scanning the mourners.

I have a surprise for you, Mr. Porter.

I was cooking something up, and it promised to be just delicious.
