Page 69 of Light in Your Eyes
I nod, contrary to the turmoil in my mind. It's such a simple answer for anyone else, but it's not an easy one for me.
I hear her flipping the pages again, but before she can continue reading the book to me, I ask her again, "What about your eyes?"
She turns silent again, and I continue, "What color are they?"
"They're blue," she says. "Why are you suddenly asking me these questions?"
A frown touches my lips. "Just wondering."
When she starts reading the words again, I can no longer hear what she says. These questions are still stuck in my head, and restlessness begins to consume me.
My heart is beating faster, and soon, I'm going to be consumed in anger. I can already feel my body shaking.
Goddammit.
I abruptly stand up, earning a soft gasp from her.
"What's wrong?" she asks with concern.
But I have to go. I need to find the answers, and I can't stay here. I'm angry, and I will only hurt her feelings.
"Kellan," her voice rings in my ears as I storm out of my room. I slam the door shut behind me with so much force, I almost think that I broke the hinge.
I skip a few steps while I'm running down the stairs. Iput my weight onto the railing so I can jump. I don't even fucking care if I fall.
Once I reach the back door, I storm through it, heading toward the backyard. I make my way through the path leading to a small forest at the back of the property like a madman. I think I'm going crazy.
The sound of my foot stepping on a twig is so loud, it rings in my ears. The three branches prick my skin while I'm forcing my way through the forest, and it's painful, I'm almost sure that it makes me bleed.
I'm so sensitive to touch. I can even feel the afternoon rays of the sun burning my face.
I almost walk into a tree, so I punch my fist into it, making my knuckles crack. The birds above me fly frantically, making sounds like the chaos in my head.
The smell of the leaves strikes my nostrils, I can almost taste it in my mouth.
I can feel everything.
I can hear everything.
Hell, I can even hear the wind whispering to me.
But I can't fucking see.
My knees drop to the ground. I dig the soil with my bare hands, gritting my teeth. The soil... It's the closest thing I can find with the same color as her hair. Maybe it's not even the same—I don't fucking know.
The soil escapes my palm while I'm trying to grip it. I can smell it. I can feel every drop of it tickling my skin, and I may even taste it if I have to, but I can't remember the color .
I pant, dropping my back onto the ground as I stare up at the sky with my arms spread wide. I'm facing the sky,and I know that it's blue, but I can't remember the color of blue anymore.
What color is blue?
What color are her eyes?
"Fuck," I curse, trying to control my heavy breathing.
I never wanted to see again so badly like this.
I want to see her eyes.
