Page 33 of Kiss Marry Kill
Clearing her throat, Angela said, “Uh, yes. I… I spilled some wine on my dress.”
Janelle looked down at her own dress. “I should probably go change too.”
“You do that.” Angela glanced around uneasily. “I… I need to go find your father and calm him down. He was livid after Kobe’s speech.” She left us, her expression strained.
One of the bridesmaids named Polly rushed up. She was a pretty redheaded girl with a dusting of freckles on her nose. “There you are, Janelle,” Polly said breathlessly. “Where the heck were you?”
“I needed a minute to myself.”
“Oh.” Polly fiddled with the top buttons of a fuzzy black sweater she wore over her bridesmaid dress.
Janelle frowned. “Why are you wearing that old sweater? It leaves fuzz everywhere.”
Polly frowned. “I was cold. It’s chilly today.”
“I’m not cold,” Janelle said.
“Well, I… I felt chilled. My iron must be low again.” Polly looked self-conscious.
“You need to take better care of yourself, Polly.” Janelle sighed. “I worry about you sometimes.”
Wrinkling her brow, Polly said, “You don’t need to worry about me. I… I was worried about you. Why did you just disappear?”
“I told you, I needed to be alone. And you didn’t need to worry.”
“I couldn’t help it. I saw Archie and your dad arguing outside the restaurant.”
“You did?” Janelle looked embarrassed. “What were they fighting about?”
“I couldn’t hear the conversation, but they both looked furious.”
Janelle’s brow wrinkled. “What in the world is going on today?”
Polly widened her eyes. “I have no idea, but I’ve had a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach all day.”
“Are you having one of your… premonitions?” Janelle asked, her expression apprehensive.
Nodding, Polly glanced around. “Something bad is coming. I just know it.”
I gave a gruff laugh. “Are you psychic?”
Polly lifted her chin. “Not exactly, but I do feel things sometimes. I also have dreams that come true.”
Royce lifted his light brows but didn’t say anything.
“She predicted that my dad’s private jet would have engine trouble.” Janelle looked completely sincere as she spoke.
“Is that right?” Royce studied Polly. “You just had a feeling?”
“Yep. Well, that time it was a dream.” Polly tucked an auburn strand behind her ear. “But it was so real.”
Janelle touched my arm. “You have to hear this story, Dr. Thornton. It still gives me the chills.”
“I’m on pins and needles.”
“Tell them, Polly,” Janelle urged.
Polly spoke in a hushed voice. “In my dream, I saw a white jet with black smoke coming out of both engines. It looked just like the kind of jet Janelle’s dad owns. The very next day, his plane almost crashed after takeoff. Can you believe it?”
