Page 67 of Kiss and Tell
My heart raced, blood rushing in my ears.
But of course, it could never be that simple.
Twenty-One
“You hungry?”Connor asked.
I blinked a few times to clear my thoughts as I swayed from foot to foot.
“You look a little faint,” he continued.
“I should head home,” I told him, my voice trembling slightly, overwhelmed at my internal revelation. “It’s been a long day.”
“We should probably get some food into you first,” he replied. “I don’t want you passing out on the way home.” Connor picked up my bag for me and slung it over his shoulder. “There’s a great pizza place down the street.”
My stomach grumbled at the word pizza. Even though I knew spending any more time in Connor’s presence was a bad idea, I really did need food.
“A quick slice wouldn’t hurt,” I murmured. Even as I said the words, I was reminded of the last time I’d said the same, when we had decided to stay an extra night on our business trip.
Connor was right that the place wasn’t far and soon we were situated at a small table for two in the middle of the restaurant. We didn’t have any privacy, but considering the turn my thoughts had taken, that was probably a good thing.
“Are we getting our own separate personal sized pizzas or sharing a full pie?” he asked.
“Depends on your opinion about pineapple,” I said.
“Hate it,” he replied immediately.
“Separate it is.”
Connor cracked a grin and I couldn’t help but return it.
The server came with two glasses of water for us. She stopped and stared at Connor when she reached the table. Her cheeks flushed and she stammered as she took our order.
“Margherita pizza for me, thanks,” Connor told her with a winsome smile as he handed back the menu. She almost squeaked in response.
“I’ll have the Hawaiian,” I told her.
Her gaze lingered on Connor as she left and I was reminded, yet again, of how charming he was. How desirable. Plenty of girls would have killed to be in my shoes.
Connor pushed one of the water glasses over to me so I didn’t have to reach across the table and put it in my hand.
“You look a little pale.” Worry lined his brow. He pushed his hair out of his handsome face, sweeping it back from his forehead, and examined me closely. “You might be dehydrated. Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine,” I mumbled as I took a sip.
Thoughtful. Sweet. Sexy as hell.
I was sure there were any number of women Connor had been with who would be calling me an idiot for keeping him at arm’s length.
Why was I fighting this so hard?
Because your career is at stake,my brain reminded me.
And it was right. If anyone at work got the slightest hint that I was involved with a client…
But it’s not like anyone would have to know,a small voice inside me cajoled.
No,I told myself firmly, cutting off that voice.
