Xander instantly regretted giving Leo an ultimatum.

Sure, Leo seemed sincere in his desire to make a future for them, but what could he do?

In the days that followed, Xander pondered Leo's power often.

One day, Leo would be king. Then he would be able to do whatever he wanted.

But not yet. Xander started to wonder if he should have accepted Leo's offer and waited until Leo became king.

Then they could be together openly. Or by then, Leo could have children with his wife.

He wouldn't want to shame her by casting her aside for Xander.

That's the thing about the future—no one knows what it holds.

“Hey, kid! Are you listening to me?” Nevan snapped his fingers in front of Xander's face. Then he scowled. “You're distracted. He's distracting you. Again. Just summon him and have sex already. I need you focused.”

“It's not sex that's distracting me.”

“Yes. I know.” Nevan rolled his eyes. “You want a future with the future king. Lo-o-ove.” Under his breath, he muttered, “It destroys us all.”

“He hasn't returned. It's been nearly a week.”

“Well, you'll see him tomorrow at the ball.”

“Tomorrow? The party is tomorrow?”

“You see?” Nevan waved a hand at Xander. “You need some sex. Between the magic lessons and your focus on the future, you can't think straight. It's too much. You need a release. Go on. Summon him. I taught you the spell.”

“I'm not going to summon him!”

“Then you'll have to wait until tomorrow night.”

“You mean when I show up at his party as a woman and lie to him the whole night?”

“Yes, precisely.”

“Ugh!”
