“Can I tell you a little secret?” When she didn’t answer, he went on. “I’m one of the best at what I do. You know what means?”
She crossed her arms in challenge. “That you’re cocky?”
He leaned close to her ear. “That people pay me a lot of fucking money to do it. I may wear thrift-store T-shirts and drive a used car, but that’s by choice. I can buy a lot of burgers, Eli. Give me another year or two, and I could probably buy the restaurant.”
Her eyes widened as he straightened and looked down at her. “Oh.”
He squeezed her shoulder. “So let me pay for your burger, all right? You can treat next time if you want.”
She wet her lips, processing that. “Okay. Thanks.”
He shrugged. “None needed.”
They headed out into the cool evening and walked back to WorkAround, a comfortable silence falling between them as Eliza quietly processed the night. Before long, they were back in the parking garage. Their footsteps echoed. The lights hummed. Her heart quickened. When they reached her car, déjà vu hit her smack in the face. Not even two hours ago, she’d stood here with another guy in the same position.
Beckham opened her door for her, his body close enough for her to smell the sweet berry scent of the shake he’d had.
Was Beckham going to kiss her, too?
She had no idea what she wanted the answer to that question to be. Warring factions took up arms in her head. No, we’re just friends! Yes, but we’re sleeping together! No, you’ve already kissed someone! Yes, but you’re not committed to anyone and are a grown woman who can kiss whomever you want!
The indecision left her frozen. Nerves filled her as he cupped her face and leaned down, but his lips landed on the top of her head instead of her lips. The contact sent a hot shiver through her.
“Text me when you get home,” he said, leaning past her and grabbing his backpack from her seat. “So I know you made it safely.”
She swallowed past the constriction in her throat. “Will do. Thanks again for the second dinner.”
He looped his backpack over his shoulder. “Thanks for the company.”
He gave her one last smile and then walked away—toward a perfectly practical Nissan Maxima.I’m one of the best at what I do.
An electric spark moved through her at the memory of how he’d said it, making her hyperaware of every inch of her body.Dammit.She got into her car and pushed the ignition to start it. If confidence in a guy was a turn-on for her, she should’ve gotten this feeling with Will. Will’s whole vibe landed in that sweet spot where he was self-assured but not full of himself. But she hadn’t felt that flutter with him like she had tonight with Beckham.
Beckham pushed her buttons. All. Of. Them.
The warring factions in her head put down their weapons and started sewing white flags.
She was in so much damn trouble.
