Photo of a group under a large oak in Eliza and Beckham’s backyard. Hill with his arm around Andi and a set of cooking tongs in his other hand. Hollyn and Jasper smiling and leaning in to each other, her with a very pregnant belly and him holding the hand of their little girl, Giselle, whose curly hair has gone wild in the wind. Eliza and Beckham laughing at something and looking right at each other, their little boy, Harrison, at their feet, holding a bored Trent and wearing a Yoda T-shirt. Mabel is off to the side, breaking into a pack of hot dogs she’s stolen from the bag by the barbecue pit.

Eliza hit the button to post the photo and then she turned her phone off. Even though she’d gotten back onto social media after her initial experiment with Beckham, she only dipped in once a day and turned it off on weekends. Moderation seemed to be the sweet spot for her. Beckham still happily abstained, and they continued attending NoPho parties, but now the parties were mostly rowdy dinners at one of their friends’ houses with everyone’s kids running around and playing analog games.
But now it was time for a longer digital break, her annual phone break that always started on Christmas—her favorite day of the year. She tossed her phone on the coffee table and smiled as Beckham sauntered in from the hallway, looking like the best kind of Christmas present in his plaid pajama bottoms and black Grinch Stole Christmas T-shirt.
“Harrison give you any trouble?” she asked, flipping the knit blanket off her legs so she could get up.
“Nah.” Beckham wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. “He said he was going to stay up to wait for Santa, but I was only two pages into his bedtime story before he was out. Solo refused to leave. I gave up and put his cat bed in there.”
Eliza laughed. “He’s got your genes. Difficult felines are just drawn to him.”
“It’s a gift,” Beckham said with a smirk. “Difficult felines and…”
He gave her an up-and-down look.
She lifted a brow. “Watch it.”
“And beautiful, sexy, wildly interesting ladies,” he finished and kissed the tip of her nose. “Well, one at least. The perfect number I need.”
She glanced at their tree, the lights sparkling. Once upon a time, she’d never felt so alone on this holiday. But tomorrow they were going to Hill and Andi’s for brunch and would spend the day with the people they loved. And tonight she and Beckham had the whole night ahead of them. “We should probably put the presents out.”
Beckham’s hands slid down to her waist. “Or…we can have movie night first.”
She grinned up at him and looped her arms around his neck. “Orsounds so much better. Think we’ll actually make it through a movie this time?”
“Not a chance, Eli.” He lifted her up. She wrapped her legs around his waist. And he carried her off to bed.
The TV stayed dark all night.
Santa was late the next morning.
Merry, merry Christmas.
