“Good for you.”
She winced.
“Miss Jacobs, I’m prescribing pain medication,” the doctor said. “Your body has been tossed around like a beach ball. Consider yourself lucky to have survived the car accident.”
I shook my head. “Risa, did you cause the accident to stop Florakis?”
Her mouth curved upward. “Yes. And I’m sure he feels worse than I do. He admitted to hitting Trenton, Luke’s murder, and a few other crimes.”
The doctor said, “I saw he’d been treated and released to FBI custody.”
The doctor and a nurse left the room. She’d be transported to a room shortly. I kissed her lightly, then pulled up a chair to her bedside. “Thank God you’re alive.”
“Your coloring matches the sheets.”
“Probably got my first gray hairs.”
She chuckled, but the muscles around her eyes revealed her pain. “What’s the status with Anna Wright?”
“In custody. HPD and agents are doing a sweep. Would you believe those two were once engaged?” She started to say somethingbut I stopped her. “Don’t talk, honey. I’ll tell you what I know. Here are the happenings on my end ...”
“Thanks. I had so many questions and no answers. Gage, we have Trenton’s and Luke’s killer.”
“Yes, we do. The worst part is over.”
While Risa slept, I made a run to Walgreens and Macy’s not far from the hospital. She’d given me her size so I could pick up a few things for her, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and pajamas that covered everything.
When I returned, Risa had been transferred to a private room. She roused from sleep the moment I entered the room. “Did you buy out the stores?”
I set the bags on a small sofa. “Not exactly. I have receipts for everything, and a gal at Macy’s helped me.”
She gave me one of her million-dollar smiles. “Christmas came early.”
“It arrived when Anna Wright and Peter Florakis were cuffed.”
“For sure. Gage, can I have one or two of your kisses?”
“As many as I want or you want?”
“It’s the same number.”
I leaned over. How I treasured this woman. Her swollen face caused me to give her a gentle kiss. “I love you. Those are the words I’m supposed to tell you every day. When your face doesn’t look like a war zone, I’ll collect on a few dozen more.”
“Thank you, and I love you too.” Her weak smile told me she needed lots of rest. “I have something serious to say.” No humor shone from her green eyes.
“I’m listening, honey.”
“Just before the accident with Peter Florakis, I forgave him for killing Trenton, Luke, and everything else he’s done. The idea of harboring hate for a man so evil made no sense when I believe in a God who will one day make everything right.”
I blinked back a touch of wetness ... me, the tough agent. “I don’t deserve you.”
“That’s how I feel about you.”
“One day I’ll tell our kids about their brave mother.”
“I’d like that. Two of them?”
“Five.” I held back a grin.
