Chapter Six
One month later…
“ A re you sure you’re ready for this?” I ask Nyx.
He nods, buttoning the top button of his black shirt.
“We can reschedule…” I offer.
He sighs, walking toward me and putting his hands on my shoulders.
“You have been preparing me for this for a whole week. We have gone out together already to practice. I have been in this form for days. I am ready.”
I nod in agreement. “Okay, yeah. You’re right.”
“Go finish getting ready before we are late.”
I head into the bathroom to brush my teeth and fix my hair.
We’re going out to meet my friends for the first time tonight. They’ve been asking where I am, and I had to keep giving excuses, but once I learned Nyx can take on a human form, I told my friends about him. Of course they wanted to meet him.
I’m no longer going to be the fifth wheel. I didn’t think this would be as exciting as it is. It’s also nerve-wracking because though he looks human, I know he’s not. And he does many things to remind me he isn’t. Like when I realized he didn’t know how to use a fork or what a toilet was. He’s right though. I have been preparing him for this all week and though my friends may find him a bit odd, at least they won’t be wondering if he’s human or not. That’s a weird thing to think.
My friends suggested we go bowling, since that and the drive-in are the only things to do in this town, and the drive-in will be hard with the six of us. At first, I knew it would be a disaster, since Nyx has no idea what the hell bowling is. But a lot of people suck at it and telling them he’s never been before should be enough of an excuse. Besides, I made him watch a ton of videos on it, so I think he gets the concept.
“Are you ready?” I look up in the mirror, seeing him standing behind me in the doorway.
He’s still tall in this form. His build a little bigger than mine. His hair is black, long enough to reach his chin, but it’s slicked back. His eyes are dark blue, and his skin is pale, like he hasn’t seen much sun. Kind of funny, when I think about it.
“Yes,” I tell him.
“You have no reason to be nervous.”
“Well, I am.”
He walks to me, taking my hand and kissing the back.
“We are mates, and I will not let anything happen to you. And,” he says, stepping closer. “When we return, I will shed this skin and fuck you in my natural form.”
I groan, my dick twitching at the thought of it. I love when he fucks me that way. It’s so much better than him in this human form, and he knows it.
We walk into the bowling alley, hand in hand. I spot my friends a few lanes to the right, and I take a deep breath before we walk over to them.
Miranda spots me first, eyes widening when she sets eyes on Nyx. There is no doubt he doesn’t fit in this town, but I came up with a cover story of me helping him with a flat tire he got while passing through. Now we’re dating and it’s pretty serious, so he visits me often.
“Hey, guys,” I say once we reach them. They’re all staring already.
“Well, hey,” Hailey says with a grin. Her gaze quickly goes to Nyx, and she offers out her hand. “I’m Hailey.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Hailey. I’m Nyx, but I’m sure you already knew that.” He smiles politely.
“Ethan filled us in,” she says.
“Miranda,” she says, offering out her hand next.
“Nice to meet you, Miranda.” He looks up at the guys. “And you must be… Brian and Scott?”
“Other way around,” I whisper quietly.
“Brian,” he says, while Scott lifts his hand in an awkward wave. I knew the guys would be a little hesitant about him.
Not because of the gay thing, but because he’s a new person and they’re both very protective of our friend group. Nyx is new, and he’s an outsider and he’s different. If only they knew how different he really was… I can’t imagine what they would do or say.
“So, are we ready to get the game going?” I ask.
“Yep, we’re already got everyone’s names in,” Miranda says.
“You’ve never played before?” Hailey asks, looking at Nyx.
“I have not.”
“Well, Scott is awful, so it’s possible you do better than him.”
“I heard that!” he shouts with a smile. She feigns innocence.
Nyx looks at me, and I lift up on my toes to give him a quick kiss. We head over to get some shoes before returning and putting them on.
“Let’s get started,” I say as I get to my feet.
Brian is up first. Then me. For some reason, they put the names in alphabetical order. Probably because they couldn’t decide who got to go first. When Nyx goes up, I hold my breath. He chooses a ball that feels comfortable, then walks to the lane, trying to find a comfortable position.
“He’s hot,” Hailey whispers to me.
“Oh, don’t I know it?” I say. She nudges me with her shoulder.
Nyx throws the ball, and it goes to the side, but he knocks two pins down. He turns to us, smiling from ear to ear like he got a strike. It’s adorable.
To think… there is a creature of the darkness hiding under that friendly smile.
And he’s all mine.
