“ I t is assumed Butterfly’s lair is within the insectoid levels,” Ismael pointed out.

“It would be the best place to start,” he added.

I wanted to hurry into his arms, to kiss him for being the man before the darkness.

“I can see you care deeply for this witch, Xavier.”

Our eyes met, his wet with tears.

Past Me growled.

“Whatever drove you away from me…” He didn’t finish, closing his eyes. Tears rolled down his lovely cheeks.

Can I catch them? Can I kiss you better?

Past Me put an arm around him, pulling him close. “Please don’t cry.”

My hearts fractured, ready to break all over again.

“I’ll start there,” I said, unable to stand more of this. The sooner this travesty ended, the sooner I could get back to my reality.

“Take this key,” Past Me said, tossing me a gold key.

To move around the various levels, at least before the walls came down in the future, specific keys were required. Unless you were the Prince Consort. This golden instrument accessed every level.
