Taking my silence as answer, he nodded and continued, “But you are responding and seem to be functioning very well. It would be hard to believe you just slept through an entire year.”
A year? That’s a long time.
Doctor Brown took a seat in the vacant chair that Chelsea had occupied. Betsy remained in the corner of the room, quietly watching, offering small reassuring smiles each time my gaze roamed to her.
“Do you remember your family?” he asked.
I shook my head, getting a slight twinge of knowing that fact should hurt…but nothing of merit came.
“Do you remember where you live?”
I shook my head.
“Do you know what two plus two is?” He quirked a bushy brow. I wanted to scoff, but I swallowed hard.
“Four,” I rasped.
He simply nodded. “Do you remember the night you fell asleep?” He leaned forward now, observing me.
I paused. The only thing I could recall past the blankness of my mind was bright red and blue flashing, holding hands, blood—I stopped and shook my head aggressively.
Doctor Brown’s head bobbed slowly. “That’s not entirely unfortunate,” he said, giving me a sad smile. He then rose from his chair. “I need to speak to a very upset and overprotective young man. I will be back shortly. In the meantime, Betsy will take care of you.”
He swiftly left the room while Betsy replaced him in the seat next to me.
“You may have been through hell and back, baby, but you are lucky.”
I slanted the lovely woman a curious look, silently asking what about any of this was lucky. Betsy gave me a full smirk, answering my silent inquiries.
“Because you got that boy out there who would do just about anything for you, meaning you’re not alone.”
14 My Mayhem
Trey
Two security guards stood between me and my girl. One short, and pudgy while the other was tall and skinny… How much more cliché could you get?
“I don’t understand why you all are being so difficult! I have sat in that room almost every day for the last year. I should be with her when she wakes up,” I announced, frustrated, at the floor of hospital staff, security guards and gathering onlookers who came to gape at the drama unfolding.
When I got the call from my mom saying Maybelle was waking up at around three in the morning, I leapt from my bed and rushed out the door to my Jeep. I managed to throw a black tee on but was out front, crawling into my car in only my boxers with my gym shorts in hand. It wasn’t until I was stopped at a red light that I finally slipped the shorts on over my hips.
My Maybelle Mason was waking up.
The short, fatty officer approached me. I was itching to wipe the floor with the man, but before anything could really happen, my mom was a force between us both.
Chelsea Turner glared daggers at me, but I couldn’t care. I had to get to my girl.
“Honey, I need you to calm down and take a seat,”Mom said sternly.
“If she’s awake, I need to be in there.”
Mom nodded. “I called you because I know how much you care about her, but I also thought you could hold on to a thread of your common sense through this process. There are some things you need to know before you can see her. Doctor Brown is with her right now. He will be out here in a few minutes to update us on everything,” she explained.
I sighed and dropped myself into a waiting chair along the wall, only a few feet from where Maybelle’s room was.
The two security guards finally stalked away when they decided I was no longer a “threat” …assholes.
Mom joined me in the seat next to mine.
