ELEVEN

LYNDSEY

“Lyndsey, what do you think? Ryat Archer, Leon, Tyson Crawford, or Vayne? Who’s the best MMC?” Lola said, looking from Brian to me.

Fuck, she was asking about my favorite main male character.

I knew Ryat Archer and Tyson were from one of the L.O.R.D.S.

books, but I had no idea which one. Raising my drink to my lips to buy myself more time, I tried for the life of me to remember where I’d heard the other two names.

I had no guess on Leon, and wasn’t Vayne that Batman villain Tom Hardy played? He was definitely hot as fuck.

“Oh, easy. Vayne, hands down,” I said, smiling and picking up my phone as it chimed. “He could break my back any day!”

Lola opened her mouth to respond, but then she and Brian shared a puzzled look, and I couldn’t help feeling like I’d gotten something wrong.

“Oh, but you know me, girl. My true love is Zade from Haunting Adeline .”

Lola’s face wrinkled with confusion. That was a girl who’d never discovered the miracle of Botox— hopeless .

I let out a forced laugh, then looked down at my phone again. “MaskedSurfer” appeared in a Discord message notification. My brow furrowed.

At least I think it did.

Having gotten my injections done just a day or two before traveling up here, my face wasn’t totally responsive yet, but fuck was I pretty.

I glanced back up to Lola and Brian, but they’d already continued on with their own conversation.

Thank God.

The truth was, I’d never read a complete romance or dark romance book in my life.

I owned plenty, at least three bookshelves’ worth.

I’d buy every single title recommended on Booktok.

I’d tried becoming a fitness influencer, a food influencer, even a makeup influencer and never really took off like I know I deserved.

Then I found Booktok, and their yummy masked men and bike boys.

All I’d needed to do was purchase a few bookshelves and perhaps a thousand dollars’ worth of books, funded of course by my OnlyFans page.

I’d attempted to read a couple of the books I’d purchased but it seriously wasn’t my thing.

It was so much easier to just Google the reviews, watch other girls’ TikTok videos, and then fake it.

I kept all of my TikTok videos vague in detail and high in cleavage.

As a result, I acquired an impressive mix of followers with a high population of fit masked men as well as biketokers.

In saying all this, though, MaskedSurfer was definitely someone I wanted to fuck around with. Smiling to myself, I unlocked my phone.

MaskedSurfer: Hey beautiful. Ditch the party. Let’s smoke. I got the best herb.

ValleySmuttQueen: Don’t want to share with the others? That’s so rude. Where are you?

MaskedSurfer: Follow the large stream east a little, till you get to the end, and there will be a beautiful lake with a pier. Meet me there, babe .

ValleySmuttQueen: Gross! Don’t call me babe . I’ll be right there. Getting high sounds so much better than Brian trying and failing to get Lola to like him. Witch probably hexed the poor guy with some voodoo shit.

I stood, shoving my phone into the front pocket of my Calvin Klein jean overalls, which matched the super cute grey-and-white sports bra and panties I was wearing underneath.

If Brian had any real taste, he’d be paying attention to me, not goth girl.

Nothing against Lola. I loved her but, really, what boy in his right mind would choose the strange goth chick with her tarot cards, scary tattoos, and monster dildos over me?

I was truly thirty-six but with all the dieting, yoga, and CrossFit, I easily passed for twenty-eight.

The cosmetic surgery helped too, of course.

Men cared way less about the odd grey hair or age line when you had a large pair of perfect tits to shake in their face.

Walking off in the direction I was told, I pulled out my iPhone and used its flashlight to guide me.

I cursed under my breath at each mysterious sound coming from the woods.

I was definitely not an outdoors kinda girl.

Vegas would have been such a better venue.

I let out a shudder, my breath creating a cloud in front of me.

Fuck, why didn’t I bring a hoodie? I would just have to steal Robert’s.

After nearly ten minutes of walking, I finally reached the lake before spotting the small boathouse and pier.

I stepped out of the tree line, the moonlit-sky illuminating the clearing perfectly.

I cut off the flashlight and slipped my phone back into the pocket of my overalls.

With my arms hugging my chest and my hands rubbing at the skin there, attempting to warm myself, I stepped onto the pier.

“Robert?” I called out when I didn’t spot him.

I did smell weed, though. Bastard better not have started without me.

I did not walk through the disgusting woods in the cold for nothing.

“Robert, where the fuck are you?” I called out once more as I approached the door to the boathouse, opened it, and stepped inside.

The door creaked loudly on its hinges as it swung open. The room was dark and smelled of lake water, mold, and dust.

“Robert?” I called out while pressing the door closed. An eerie creaking sound rose from behind me, urging me to turn back around. “Fuck!” I cursed when an imposing masked figure appeared in front of me.

“Hello, Barbie,” was the last thing I heard before I saw the backside of a large splitting-axe swinging towards me.
