“Please, you won’t testify against me. You’d be the one helping me bury the body.
” She tossed her hair, raising an eyebrow at them, daring either of them to disagree.
Mason and David exchanged a glance. She wasn’t wrong.
“Anyway. You two, shoo. I’m going to text Cassidy, and I have work I need to get done. ”
“I need to talk to you, anyway,” Mason said, straightening up and focusing his attention on David. They walked away from Jennifer before she could shoo them again.
“What’s going on?” David asked, immediately on high alert. It felt like his nervous system was constantly tense ever since the flower delivery on Saturday, as if he couldn’t entirely relax. It didn’t take much for him to go from zero to sixty.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing to do with Cassidy. It’s personal to me.” Mason hesitated.
Even as David relaxed again, he frowned.
“What do you need?” He couldn’t imagine what Mason would want to talk to him about that was so important. That must have been why Mason had been hanging out at the front desk instead of being back in his office. He definitely had work to do, just like David.
“Remember how I said my parents want to arrange my marriage?” Mason kept his voice low, as if he wanted to ensure no one else overheard them, even though from what David could see, no one else was in the office yet.
Maybe he was just worried his voice would carry back to Jennifer, even though they were walking away from her.
“Yes… wait, is that actually happening?”
“Well, they found someone that they want me to meet.”
David stopped in his tracks, turning to look at Mason, who also stopped but kept his gaze averted from David’s. Something was going on. David put his hands on his hips.
“If you don’t want to meet her, you don’t have to. You can back out now. The sooner you do it, the easier it will be on them, so they don’t get their hopes up.”
“That’s the thing, I’ve already met her,” Mason said carefully, like he was measuring out his words.
Impatience made David tap his foot, and he frowned at Mason. It wasn’t like the other man to draw things out like this.
“Just say it, man. You’re not announcing a beauty pageant winner.”
“It’s Yasmine.” The words came out in a rush, and David’s jaw dropped as Mason hurried to continue. “You know her better than me, so I was wondering, before I meet her to talk about us getting married, what your opinion is… if you think we’d be a good match.”
“I mean… I don’t really know know her,” David said slowly. “I’ve spent some time with her. I’ve seen her in the club. So you guys have that going for you. You’re both kinky.”
“I had that thought, too, even though we’ve never scened together.
She’s a beautiful woman, very attractive, that part’s all there…
but what would you think of us as a couple?
” Mason was obviously uncomfortable, but he was pushing himself to ask, which meant that David could only give him a serious answer.
Which was probably why Mason had come to him in the first place since any of the rest of their team would probably give him a hard time. Including Claudia, who obviously knew Yasmine the best.
“From what I know of her, you’re both smart people who enjoy good food and are kinky…
so you have some things in common.” David shrugged.
Unfortunately, his knowledge of Yasmine was mostly surface-level.
“I can picture you together, if that helps. You two look like you’d fit. Why haven’t you ever scened with her?”
Mason shrugged.
“I don’t know, it just never came up.” But his gaze flickered away again. David frowned.
“You don’t actually believe she’s cursed and that if you scened with her, you’d have ended up marrying the next person you scened with, do you?” David asked, unable to hide his amusement.
“Logically, no, but it is weird that it’s happened so many times.
” Mason’s smile was rueful. Reaching up behind his head, he rubbed the back of it sheepishly.
“And I wasn’t ready to be in anything serious yet, so it didn’t seem wise to tempt fate.
Especially since the other superstition is that you always find your person when you’re not looking for them. ”
“I guess you’re safe there since it was your parents who looked for and found her.
” David chuckled. “I’m guessing she’s doing the same in order to avoid the curse herself.
It makes sense. If she goes straight to the marriage, she doesn’t have to worry about dating and breaking up and her ex immediately finding the woman he’s going to marry. ”
“Makes sense.” Mason sighed. “Can you not tell anyone yet? I want to get through our first meeting without the whole team knowing what’s going on.”
“I won’t, but if Yasmine tells Claudia…” He left the words hanging. Mason made a face.
“Hopefully, she’ll feel the same way. If not, maybe that’s a sign that she’s not the one for me.
” Clearly, he wasn’t convinced that Yasmine was going to be the one for him, anyway, even though he’d decided to let his parents arrange his marriage.
Maybe it would have been easier for him if they’d picked a complete stranger.
“Maybe.” David wasn’t sure what else to say. “How many times do you meet before you decide to get married?”
“I’m not sure. I guess we’ll talk about that this weekend, too.
Maybe a few times, just to make sure we want the same things out of life.
Where we’ll live, kids, that kind of thing.
” He rubbed the back of his head again. “Though my parents supposedly talked to her parents about that already, I feel like we should as well, just to make sure neither was misrepresented.”
“Hey, her being local is another plus,” David said. “Unless you wanted to move.”
“I don’t. That’s a good point. I feel like, on paper, we’re a pretty good match.” Mason was starting to look more heartened, as if he was talking himself into the marriage. “So, yeah. I guess we’ll see.”
Voices came down the hall—Jennifer greeting someone else at the front desk. Far enough away to not be able to make out the words but enough to hear that someone had come in. Mason stiffened, then dropped his hand down from his head, tugging on his suit jacket.
“Anyway, thanks. And, ah, I’ll let you know how it goes and if you can tell anyone afterward.”
“Great. Um, good luck.” Because what else was he supposed to say?
Mason gave him a wan smile, as if he knew exactly what David was thinking.
“Thanks.”
Time to get back to work. Mason might be getting married soon, but David had his own woman he needed to focus on—if he wanted to have any kind of future with her, they needed to take care of her stalker first.
